    Just went through the application process and it's asking me to send an orginal bank statement to them as proof of ID. This has to be sent to:

    FREEPOST KAUPTHING EDGE

    I guess it must be correct, I just don't ever recall seeing a single line address before?

    You have to understand that in Iceland the phone books are listed by first names. No Joke, it is a very very very small country by population.

    That's just one credit reference agency. If you look at the whole picture it's more of a mixed bag, but probably on a par with some of the smaller UK banks.
  • Looks good enough for me, application for the fixed rate 'bond' made and waiting for their response. Thanks to the forum posters :)

    I am very impressed by the 7.16% three year rate as there are no other banks/building societies offering anything like that so far as I can see. Would stay well below the £35000 FSA cap if I invested.

    I have most of my capital in fiixed rate bonds which I roll over each year into the best bonds on offer at the time as am coming up to retirement. Am a bit concerned that if I have all my money in the current high rate one year bonds there may be nothing good around when they are all maturing.

    Would be interested in others views.

    I'm like you moneylover, most of my capital is in fixed rate bonds to try to maximise interest. The risk we take is that something paying a higher rate of interest will come along and, of course, when they mature, what then?
    However, I am content with my decision because I would be irritated if the interest rates drop (which they probably will) and I missed the boat re the fixed rate bonds. Can be a bit of a dilemma:confused:

    I've e-mailed Kaupthing asking why they exclude residents of Northern Ireland from applying for their accounts. Their web-site says;

    Are you a resident of mainland UK (this excludes Channel Islands or Isle of Man)?
  • I always took it that Northern Ireland was part of the UK, regardless whether its mainland or otherwise, perhaps they do too?

    Interesting/scary article here - Kaupthing get a mention near the bottom (as does Landsbanki) http://www.moneyweek.com/file/41437/credit-default-swaps-how-to-spot-the-riskiest-banks.html
    Despite the errors in this article, the underlying point about using credit default swaps to understand the relative riskiness of a bank is very interesting. Does anyone know where to find the CDS rates for other banks?

  • At the risk of incurring the wrath of those who may have posted this elsewhere.... I will ask this question --- Has anyone else had a problem with the sort code that Kaupthing has listed for BACS deposits into its K.Edge account? My newly-opened a/c is up-and-running today so I have tried to make a transfer from my "bank" - CoventryBS's First - only to have it tell me, on-line, that it didn't recognise the sort code (62-30-86). Kaupthing told me on the phone that "Yes, a couple of banks need to up-date their sode codes - it's definitely correct". On the phone to CoventryBS & the CS man said he'd do it manually [ooh, matron!] & then said the sort code was coming up as National Westminster Bank. Back on the phone to Kaupthing where the CS lady was a bit vague but said "Yes, it is connected with NatWest". Back on the phone to Coventry who said they'd need to refer it to another department & get back to me asap. What a ----ing nightmare, just to try & deposit funds with a new savings a/c!
    Expect the worst & hope for the best...
