I need Broadband (and a phone line)

All change this weekend when DS1 moves into his own place!

Trouble is that he's been in charge of the phone line and Broadband. So he's taking his work-related lo-cost non-bt phone line with him and also his industrial strength broadband connection. So what do I do? According to him I need to find something else! Helpful Huh?!

We do have Sky, but no cable in the area, and we don't have a bt phone line. Should I get one? Theres only me and DS2 who won't do masses of downloading, just a reasonable amount of surfing. We don't need super speedy, just not super slow.

I shall need to sort this next week so any ideas welcome. Cost will be an issue as I shall lose income from his rent and it's yet to be seen just who subsidised who!

If its not a BT line, who are you paying line rental to?
Also which ISP are you using.
I'd get him to get your phone transferred back to BT, on BT Together Option 1 and then you can start looking for an ISP.
Google for Samknows and see which operators are available on your exchange.

Thanks for that. No idea about current ISP. All I know it's industrial strength for his work (he's a programmer) and we have nothing to do with BT as he previously worked for a communications company and had benefits of cheap deal from them that he'll take with him to new abode.

Samknows tells me I can get Sky TV broadband + phone - is this a good idea? Or Tiscali although I've never heard good things about them. I do have an O2 phone so I could get broadband through them I guess. Are they reliable?

I'm on Sky Broadband, Mid package £5.00 a month and its worked fine for the last 12 months. had a bit of a foul up at the beginning though which left me without BB for three months. Faulty equipment in the exchange.
In any case you need a BT line for Sky broadband so that's the first thing that needs sorting out.

I am a very new user of the Sky package, TV, phone, (although keeping BT line as advised on here), and broadband. Everything delivered on the dates they advised in advance. When I needed help with the wireless broadband - (it turned out to be finger trouble on my behalf and because I had not thoroughly read the instructions!), although it was an 0870 number they were very slow and patient until it was all sorted.

    I cannot fault them!

Just rang Tiscali customer services this morning as we were paying £17.99 per month for Broadband when new customers pay £14.99. Changed it no problem. Asked about a free wireles router and was told I'd have to start a new 12 month contract with them. Not sure about that and will have to have a family conference first.
Anyway we haven't had any major problems with them.

    1. You dont have to get a BT Line their are other smaller suppliers but they usually want you to take their Broadband.Eg.

    http://www.thephone.coop/residential/linerental/installreconnect.html

    2. If you want to go to Talk Talk,Orange,or Tiscali for your line rental, they will insist you have a BT Line first as they just want to cherry pick BT,s customers.

    3. A new BT Line Contract is for 12 months,and cost,s £70 to cancel.

First step seems to crawl back to BT ....! I haven't missed them one bit, or the size of their bills. We haven't paid more than £11 including overseas calls per month since leaving although I do realise these are subsidised. I shall make more use of my contract mobile minutes if I can.

Then I think I might do the Sky thing unless anyone has any comments on the o2 option.

If you are prepared to sign up with BT for eighteen months you can get half price installation if they are going to charge you to come back. More details here.

Not sure that I need anything connected, do I? I didn't need anything disconnected. I thought it was all done like your mobile is; via a PAC code or similar. I might not go back if they charge. It wasn't that long ago they wrote to me pleading to have me back!

You said that it was a "non BT phone line" and "First step seems to crawl back to BT"
