So this afternoon I went to the foreign currency desk in my high street Barclays branch and bosh, job done. 30 CYP = £35.75 GBP.
There's your answer then. Better than trying to hunt down a branch of the Bank of Cyprus!!
I'm asking this because I have a feeling that they will come after you for the money bank once they realise that the currency is no longer traded in the UK.0 -
It was at Travelex at Heathrow.Lightbulb moment Dec 2005 - debt £23700

I know this is an old post but I printed some information from our bank today so thought it might help somebody out
"As of 1st Feb only euro banknotes and coins may be used for payment in cyprus but banks and co-operative credit societies will be able to exchange cyprus pounds banknotes and coins free of charge at the fixed conversion rate until 30th June 2008. Fees will be charged if the amount per customer exceeds CYP 1000 for banknotes and CYP 50 for coins. Thereafter it will still be possible to exchange Cyprus pound banknotes for 10 years and coins for 2 years at the central bank of Cyprus."Lightbulb moment Dec 2005 - debt £23700

But, correct me if I'm wrong, isn't this referring to the banks IN Cyprus, not the UK.
I'm off there at the end of April if anyone wants to sell me some CYP's0 -
I just found out that Cyprus had changed to the Euro. Heard it on BFBS radio and thought I was hearing things. Apparently not! I loved the Cyprus Pounds! It was a nice currency, great notes but now they are using the bland and boring Euro notes. What a shame.
My question is, what happens if I were to keep my £5 and £1 CYP £ notes? Will they be collectable or worth anything in say 20 years time? More than their current face value? I googled this and could not find any ideas. Or is it best to change them back to Sterling while we still can?0 -
The Central Bank of Cyprus will exchange free of charge, coins until the end of 2009 and notes, until the end of 1017 so you still have some time.
Unless your notes are in pristine condition, I wouldn't bother hanging on to them.0 -
Thanks. So this would mean visiting the Central Bank HQ at 80, KENNEDY AVENUE, CY-1076 NICOSIA ? Or are there other locations I could change them. I see earlier posts that Barclays are changing them in the UK.0

I asked our bankers and was told that as long as we can sell Cyprus pounds to Cypriot banks then we should still buy them in. So I guess that it should be ok for the next 10 years as thats how long we have to sell it back to cyprus banks.Lightbulb moment Dec 2005 - debt £23700
