Please can I just check I have my set up correct.
I have left the wireless connection with the router set up as how I normally access the internet.
I have then just ran a cable from one of the LAN ports on the router to the back of the PC. Both lights on the PC and router port are flashing to indicate there is no problem with the connection. Yet I still can't log in to the router.
I have a Wireless Configuration Uilitily set up on the PC. Under the security tab there is a box called "Passphrase" with a tick box saying "Create with passphrase".
Under this there are 4 boxes with manual keys. The tick box for Key 1 is set up.
Can I enter a new passphrase in here instead?
 Thanks0

When you enter a passphrase into the WEP box and then click on "Generate" it will create four Keys, one of which is what you need to enter into any device that you want to connect to the router. e.g. the key that is selected in the router.
I am confused when you say that you can't log into the router! How can you see these options if you can't log in? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

I can see these when I click on the "Netgear Wireless Configuration Uilitily" which was installed on the PC when the router was set up.
I don't need to connect to any of the LAN ports to see this information. The keys however are all encrypted.0

You really seem to be making hard work of this!
While connected via an Ethernet cable, follow the steps 1 - 5 given in the manual 3-10 - To configure WEP data encryption, follow these steps:

I have finally managed to get, and enter, a key on my laptop.
I can now access the internet on the laptop, but this has now caused problems on my PC. It says that the wireless connection has limited connectivity and will not connect to the internet. The signal strength is still excellent.
If I fix the problem on the PC, then the laptop has limited connectivity and vice versa.
Are there any settings that need to be changed to enable me to access the internet on both?

Was this router supplied to you by Telewest/Virgin? If so it probbaly has their own hacked about version of firmware on it which will only allow one pc to connect to it at a time. Some info about it here. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0

Yes, it was supplied by Telewest free of charge back in October 2004.
Looks like a phone call to Virgin is required. I did read on another site that some people were being given free routers by Virgin. As a loyal customer I might try to get a new one from them.
Does anyone know if the routers supplied by Virgin enable you to connect more than one computer?
Also, if I need to buy a new router with higher security does anyone have any recommendations on what to buy/avoid?
 Thanks in advance.0
