Connecting dell laptop to Netgear wireless router

Connect to the router by typing http://192.168.0.1 into your browser.
I can't even connect to that page when I connect the router to the PC.0

So what did you mean when you said this previously? When I log in to the router, the SSID is the same but can't see the same passphrase anywhere.
When I look at the security details, the passphrase is blank, and all that is under it is 4 manual keys? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

I had gone through the Netgear Configuration Ulitility on my PC, which I had assumed was what was meant by loggin in to the router.
I didn't realise you had to connect the router to the PC instead.0

If you type ipconfig into a command prompt (Start, run, cmd, OK) the Default Gateway is what you need to type into your browser, to access your routers set-up pages when connected via an Ethernet cable. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

            Sorry, that doesn't work either.0

Sorry, I don't know if I'm looking at the Netgear in the correct place because I can't find any option to change the encryption from WEP to WPA-PSK.
How do you log in to the Netgear router and change this?
Sorry to be a pain but don't want to mess up any of my other settings.
 Thanks
You don't live up the road from me do you? They've got an unsecured Netgear still on defaults.
 Ok...
 1) Open up a web browser on the desktop
 2) Type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar.
 3) At the login prompt, type admin as the username and password as the password (Netgear defaults)
 4) On the page that opens up, select Wireless Settings on the left. The middle pane will now change and everything we do will be in here now.
 5) In the box next to Name(SSID) change it from Netgear to something else. This will be the name of the Wifi network.
 6) A bit further down under "Security Options", tick the WPA-PSK box.
 7) Further down from there, under WPA-PSK Security Encryption, in the box next to Network Key, enter a password. This will be the same password you and anyone wanting to connect to your wireless network will need to enter when they first set up a connection from their computer.
 8) Click Apply below that and shut down the browser.
Now on to the laptop. View all wirless networks and you'll now see one listed with the name you entered in step 5. Connect to that and it'll ask you for the Passphrase/Key and enter the password you put in step 7.

I thought it was going to be so simple.
 PC is running Windows XP.
Netgear router connected to Virgin V+ Box.
I have now connected Netgear router to PC via one of the 4 LAN ports, but still can't log in to the router.0

See if you can follow these instructions here. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

            Thanks everyone for your help.
