Have just called to ask if I have had the letter, the site is down at the moment and the guys do not have access to normal security so they have had to ask series of questions, one of which was "can you name the year and month you opened the account" reply was approx 8 or 9 years ago maybe a little longer....I am sorry sir if you cant answer this correctly we cant discuss your account.... now call me petty but do they really expect me to remember the month I applied for a credit card when it was that long ago....anyway they can stick their card, if they havnt cancelled it for me I will be closing it asap0

Too right. Next they will be expecting you to remember your security details.
I dont know since Citigroup took over the service has deteriated.0 -
Add me to the 161k!
I'm annoyed because although I don't have a great credit rating I've always paid the minimum and in 7 years not missed one payment to Egg  Having said that it was for me only a good deal when APR was 9.9%, sadly those days are gone with a nasty and pretty run of the mill 16.9%. In a funny sort of way I should see this as a blessing in disguise but it was always handy for times when like some of us our backs were against the wall.
Always a great way to treat good customers.. Nice one Egg!So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they soon become inevitable Christopher Reeve (1953-2004)0 -

but could you remember the month and year you opened an account (given it was over 8years ago), yes I could dig it out from the files but there was no time for that, security yes, ask me my security password/mothers name etc etc but the month of account opening?0 -

That question is pretty much a last resort. You will have only been asked that if you got at least 2 of the previous questions incorrect. As you weren't able to answer that it means you have not been able to answer or you have answered incorrectly 3 questions.
Frustrating as it may be, those questions are there to ensure they don't give out your details to anyone else.
**Edit** Just noticed your 2nd post. They would normally ask for 2 letters/numbers of your password etc, but as you said yourself - their normal security systems aren't working at the moment so they have to use the back up which is why you were asked all those questions.0 -
Just got my letter today. think they reacted to the press quick then suddenly got rid of some of the risky people - lol0

I'd be ok if they gave me 12 goes at it.0

I got a letter for my Egg Visa card this morning so that's both my Egg cards cancelled now!
I'm such a credit risk that RBS just upped my credit limit on my gold card from £8k to £10k purely through an online request; they didn't even ring me up to ask why! The extra £2k there will offset the now £9k lost from Egg.EGG are a bunch of complete bankers!0 -

That's alright - you wouldn't have been able to anyway - it's been down for 'maintenance' all day todayConjugating the verb 'to be":
