  • Right, this is going to sound like a stupid question but........

......has anyone tried to make yoghurt with milkshake such as Yazoo or UHT with milkshake powder?
  • Hello All!

I just recently got an Easiyo as a present and excited to make homemade yogurt! I was hoping to make greek yogurt but I am having a hard time trying to find an easy foolproof recipe without having to buy the sachet. I've been searching and searching but to no avail; either I don't have UHT milk or I can't find a sachet to use as a start or they seem a bit to complicated. I would be so grateful to you all if any of you could throw some good recipes my way! Pretty please!! :)

I'm very new to yoghurt-making (just got my first batch in now!) but as far as I can tell, you use UHT milk, a couple of tablespoons of live yoghurt, a couple of tablespoons of dried milk powder (optional) and make it as usual, then strain it through something. A jelly bag, some muslin, even some kitchen roll lining a colander. An hour should do it.

Thats what I do but I dont use the milk powder as for some reason when I do it comes out a bit grainy. I strain about 1/3 then mix it back in with the rest so its a thickish youghurt. I also add vanilla extract and sweetener as I don't like tart yoghurt (maybe as when I was a kid we would always have the cheap sugary stuff?).

    Good luck

That's exactly how I do it - I sacrifice the first batch from a new yoghurt starter and freeze in ice cube trays as future starters. My procedure is just 1 pint of UHT skimmed milk heated to 43degrees, mixed with one defrosted cube of yoghurt and bunged in a pre-heated wide neck flask for minimum 10 hours.

I then strain 1/3 of it for an hour or so and mix the results back into the main batch - but very, very slowly - over vigorous mixing actually causes the yoghurt to turn really runny. This results in a good thick, but still pourable consistency. Just perfect for stirring in some stewed fruit.
  • Thank you everyone for your comments. Unfortunately, I don't have UHT milk. I tried another method and it didn't work out. Back to square one.

The supermarkets all sell UHT milk and it keeps for ages. I bought one for a camping trip last summer and it only went out of date at the end of January.

I've been looking at Easiyo for months and finally bought one in Lakeland for £6.99 today. I bought the greek sachets and a couple of fruit squirts too. A couple of people at work swear by Easiyo, so was finally convinced.

Have one yogging in the kitchen (Hopefully) as we speak.

thanks primrose...if I used a jelly bag would runny yog turn to similar consistency to shop bought? or will it not make much difference?

will changing the hot water and leaving the yog in the easiyo for longer make a difference to the thickness?

Straining yoghurt through a jelly bag will drain off all the whey (that yellowish watery liquid) and mean that the remaining yogurt will be of a thicker consistency, although of course you'll have less of it. If there's only a small amount of whey I often tend to whip it back into the mixture.

Depending on how long you've incubated the yoghurt for, it's always worth renewing the hot water for another couple of hours or so but this doesn't always make much of a difference. Sometimes my yoghurt seems to thicken up once it's been chilled in the fridge for a few hours but being a "living culture" it can develop a mind of its own and occasionally just not do what you expect of it.
  • We got our easiyo yoghurt maker from QVC. Having built up a good selection of flavours its used alot. We even make the yoghurt cheese its so simple. We were so impressed with the yoghurt that we talked our DD into getting one.
I really think this would go down as one of my "best gadget buys".
