  • There always seems to be one at every boot sale I go to - but you can do the job perfectly with a food vacuum flask (it has a wider opening for you to spoon it out of)you just have to heat the UHT to the hotter side of warm. All the machines are just for keeping the temperature going and a flask will do fine. I'd still be using mine if I hadn't found a Lakeland bulk machine at a boot sale for £2.00 and the only reason I use it instead of the flask is that it's easier to wash in the sink....that's all.

I think my problem may have been that the UHT milk was warmed in the microwave and not at room temperature. I'll try it again. Thanks!

I would like to start making my own yoghurt for the kiddies as dessert, and to bring to school.

I know you can buy the Easiyo yoghurt maker and sachets. The cheapest sachets I've seen online with Easiyo are about £1.69 each, which makes 1 kg of yoghurt, and the cheapest Easiyo yoghurt maker is £10.99.

Has anyone made yoghurt any other way? I have got a wide-mouthed thermos flask at home and would rather use this. I have seen the homemade yoghurt section on https://www.about.com, but would really appreciate info on where to get alternative sachets, if cheaper and just as good, and your first hand experiences.

    Cheers.

I made some last night in a wide neck flask. It was the first time I had made it in years. I have a yogurt maker ..... somewhere, but I don't know where.

I just followed the advice on the boards. I used UHT milk, 50p a litre in Asda. I heated it for a couple of minutes in the microwave, so it was only just warmed. I mixed two heaped spoons of dried milk powder and three spoons of yogurt. It was a big success. Had it over bananas with honey and chocolate sauce.

I have no idea if the quantities of milk powder and yogurt were correct - I just guessed. Also, I think it may be possible to do it without heating the UHT milk. If you are using ordinary milk, you have to boil it first and then let it cool before adding the other things.

We've never used the dried milk. We just boil some milk, let it cool down, when it's tepid we stir in a carton of natural yoghurt, and put it in the airing cupboard.

I've made it in a flask too. I boiled the milk using a "milk saver" to stop it boiling over, let it cool to blood heat then stirred in a couple of spoonfuls of plain yoghurt, you can add dried milk powder if you want it thicker, then pour into the wide necked flask and leave for a few hours until it thickens, lovely! Got my recipe from a Shirley Goode book I think.
