The sachets are the Easiyo sachets and you just add water. :)

    thank you!

So if I bought the Easiyo, I would just need to add one of these sachets, water and live yoghurt to make a litre of yoghurt? or do I need to add milk powder aswell?

Sorry to be a pain, im a bit confused :o

That seems quite expensive to me. I make a litre of yogurt in an electric yogurt maker. I put in 2 tbsp of starter yogurt (10p approx) a litre of UHT milk (53p) and about 4 tbsp of dried skimmed milk (19p approx), so 82p for a litre. Subsequent batches cost 72p as I use yogurt from the previous batch as a starter. I suppose I should factor in the cost of the electricity too, but I've no idea what that would be:)

If you are a buttermaker, take a look at my thread on using buttermilk (maybe I should have posted it here) I made a litre of yoghurt for virually nothing with the left over buttermilk

Milk powder is certainly optional, but I find (as do others) that it makes the yogurt really thick and creamy, almost like Greek yogurt.

UHT milk isn't necessary either. The advantage is that it doesn't have to be heated to kill bugs first as it has already had that done to it :) You just pour it in straight from the carton into the yogurt maker.

I've never had any success with heating up fresh milk and using it for yogurt making.

If you were to use a litre of fresh milk and no milk powder the yogurt would probably cost about 60p a litre.

i keep UHT skimmed milk in the house anyway to use in porridge so it makes sense to use this in yoghurt - the value stuff is cheap as well and don't have to go to the faff of heating it! i would doubtless burn it or boil it over!

also, tesco value UHT skimmed milk is only 35p! i also buy the value skimmed milk powder which is v cheap too.

am gonna try making yoghurt with soya milk too, for a change.

T-L i might try pouring the whey away next time!!

Bexstars, basically i think this is the situation:

if you buy an easiyo maker you are meant to buy the easyio sachets. all you do with them is add cold water.
BUT, moneysavers have realised that all there is in the sachets is milk and the cultures needed to make yoghurt.

so, rather than buying the sachets (which cost about £1.50) you can still use the easiyo maker and make yoghurt without the sachets.

the easiest way to do this is:

a litre of UHT milk (skimmed, semi, or whole, depending on how healthy you want it)
a few tablespoons of skimmed milk powder (if you want creamier yog)
2 tablespoons of live yoghurt (must be live, and as fresh as possible)

then you basically use the maker in the same way it says (mix all the ingredients in the tub and then leave it in the water for 6 hours or more).

    thankyou very much!

I think even I could give this a go so will have another look on ebay and see if I can get me a bargin. My little girl loves yoghurt and what would be better than to give her fresh homemade yoghurt :D

How does the Easiyo system work folks ? Is it just a thermos flask ?

    basically its in 2 bits:

there's a litre jar with a lid where you mix the milk / mixtures

then a flask type thing with a lid. you half fill this with boiling water, pop the jar in and screw on the outer flask lid.

it then has the function of keeping the yoghurt at the right temp for the cultures to develop.
