Has anyone else heard of this... apparently if you take part in a kind of email chain letter you can make thousands of pounds in your paypal account..

Would you like to buy some of my magic beans........?
  • It was an obvious scam I know but hey who cares.. we live and we learn..

Besides, this should act as a warning to all, particularly those who have moments of madness like me! If anyone had asked me about it I would have screamed 'NO, YOU FOOL, IT'S A SCAM!'

I get several of these £3 paypal chain letter scams a week and they really make my blood boil. Just because I have been in a transaction with another user doesn't give them the right to spam me with rubbish and send my email address to hundreds of other users.

The last one of these I got came from a work account. I decided enough was enough so as well as reporting the member to ebay and to paypal, and making a formal complaint to the ISP I also contacted the business and complained that one of their staff was sending spam through a work account. The HR department sent me a very brief email acknowledging my complaint and saying that it was an internal matter and would be dealt with as appropriate and that they did not condone the use of work accounts for private mail, so hopefully someone will have learnt to stop spamming people.

I get so many that I now refuse to just ignore them.

My own address I use on ebay is a fixed address and I prefer not to use that address for anything that is likely to involve me in spam. Most of these £3 paypal scams contain hundreds of email adresses as senders send it to everyone in their address book. Senders rarely bother to blind copy the address and just list everything openly.

I don't want my address made available to everyone and I strongly suspect that some of those addresses shown openly are harvested for more spam.

Ok, I understand. Do you think the 'spammer' might be able to trace you? I hate conflict and trouble (I've already had a bit on Ebay) and try to avoid anything that might antagonize anyone. All for a peaceful life, me!

My philosopy in life is ...do to others, what you would have them do to you. Maybe its rather simplistic, but I find it works for me.

    Hey this is getting heavy......sorry!

It's not so much 'trace me' is just that I prefer my fixed email address to be used sparingly, I use Hotmail for anything that might result in spam.

Looking at the list of addresses on the last £3 paypal scam I received there are addresses for people working for several large companies included , there are also two local government email addresses and an NHS one. I really don't think those people want their email addresses openly circulated to everyone in the spammers address book. As I now have those people's addresses it means they also have mine, what if I was legitimately using my work address which I am entitled to do in my own time as long as I am circumspect about sites I visit and mail I receive? My work address clearly identifies me, as does several addresses I now have here. Out of interest I Googled two of the people, I now know their work titles and place of work and even the age of one of them..When they signed up for ebay they are promised that ebay will not use their address for unwanted email, this does not appear to work if other users feel free to circulate addresses at will.
