It took me a while to get used to green tea as well.

The first time I let it stew like I do with fruit teas and it was disgusting.

Now I just dunk it in and out, and have half a spoon of sugar with it.

  • After reading this I'm even more enthusiastic about it now - thanks Ted

You'd think that the benefits would be shouted about by the manufacturers more than they are at the moment

    Less sugar too?

I've reduced from two tsps to one level tsp and my waistaline has shrunk too. Also from full fat to semi skimmed milk.

The weight is coming off slowly... but it IS coming off.

Acne and Green Tea - Skin Care suggests that sugar neutralises the beneficial effects of the active ingredient in green tea.
Green tea and the skin. is a paper summarising the effects on the skin so the idea in post 3 of this thread to use it as a skin wash has good support.
Edit Further search of Green Tea research papers provides nothing to substantiate the above claim that adding sugar to green tea prevents it working. While clearly adding extra calories won't help weight loss there is nothing to suggest the health benefits are reduced, rather that where tea is consumed in a high sugar diet the beneficial effects can still be seen. For further info click The results indicate that the hypocholesterolemic activity of powdered green tea might be due to the inhibition of the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver.

So you're saying that if I have green tea with sugar it's of much less help to me?

And that I might be better off just bathing in the stuff?

  • This green tea doesn't go with milk at all (ugh) and is fine without sugar so in itself is a low calorie drink, not including it's other weightloss properties.

Out of interest Twinings have 7 flavours of green tea - Pure...Jasmine, Orange and Lotus Flower... Pear and Apple... Pineapple and Grapefruit.... Earl Grey...Gunpowder and cost around £1.00 for 20 bags so 5 pence per cup in total....very MSE

To be honest the "Don't use sugar"comment came from that one website only and I cannot find any scientific evidence to support it so I think I'll go back and edit it out.

If you look at Green tea research you will see that in one experiment rats were fed 50% sugar and 15% fat together with 130 mg powdered green tea per day depressed body weight increase and various adipose tissue weights but food intake was unaffected.
So if the green tea catechins were demonstrably working in a 50% sugar diet I don't think your tsp of sugar in tea is going to seriously affect the effect.

Re-introducing Tea to the West - This Time to Fight Cancer

The Truth In Tea New update!
Global Green Tea Movement: Re-introducing the Art and Science of Drinking Tea

These two brochures provide some very interesting information about using Green Tea. It particularly stresses the value of using leaf tea as opposed to tea bags and has this (as well as much else) to say about decaffinated green tea.
Therefore, decaffeinated green tea may not
function as well as the whole green tea in
    chemoprevention against cancer. Besides, the
decaffeination process may remove other important,
but not yet identified beneficial ingredients from the
    tea leaves.

Own up, you swallowed a green tea encyclopedia for breakfast this morning didn't you? :)

That's all a lot to take in at once. I shall have to put my cogitation jacket on.
