Negative Income

Please help, my outgoings exceed my incomings - before we even get to nights at the pub, cinema, shopping, buying snacks at lunchtime or any other what i now call a luxury!!

I earn 1,000 a month
My mortgage is 457
My council tax is 90
Water 25
Elec 30 (but in debt by 150)
Gas 50 but in debt by 200
Insurance 41
Phone 20
Car loan 139
Car ins 71
Credit card 200 (min 30)
Credit card 350 (Min 30)
Double glazing 4,600 (min 20)
Food and petrol 80

I can't remortgage as I did recently to get a fixed rate - so tied in for 2 years.

Any ideas would be greafully recieved, Im trying to sort a weekend job, but my current employers are not happy about it as they like me to do occasional overtime for them....

I can't get rid of the car as i need it to get to work aside from the fact the type of loan i have on it is a very high penalty clause to get out of it, plus i would have to pay it all off, which i can't afford to do...

I haven't had a holiday in over 5 years, i shop for clothes in charity shops, ity woud be nnice not to have to worry about money or feel guilty for meeting a friend for coffee.....

I am looking for another job, but struggling to find something that pays the same.

I am advertising for a lodger, people come to the house but they don't want the room. Its a very small house really and quite close together, my living room is quite small, so there isn't much room, which i guess would be a bit weird for a total stranger, practically sat on top of each other. Unfortunately all friends either live with partners or own their own homes also. Im single and own my house.

I do car boot sales, although its very cold this time of year, so i have to wait till it gets warmer, we earnt 13 each just before xmas - very poor!, i have sold a few books on amazon, but not many.
I got scammed on ebay so I won't use it now.

HELP!!!
I need to start saving so I plan to save £2 a week to start with:beer:

The insurance at £41 - is that buildings and contents? If so, it seems high. Have a look on moneysupermarket and confused.com to see if you can cut it.

Join quidco and see if you can get some cash back with a better deal on insurance with them. Car insurance is also high - I would do the same with that - you may well get a chunk off by comparing prices.

What are the APR's on your CC's? Do you have a good enough credit file (no missed payment etc) to go for a 0% card to shuffle the CC debt onto?

Good luck - you'll get lots more suggestions :)

  • I have a terrible credit history! i remortgaged previously to clear debts from about 5 years ago. I will have to wait 3 months apparently before i can re apply. BUT i now have the windows as a charge on my property so i don't think i could change my credit cards - I had to make a choice to clear lots of small debts that were all ccjs, or pay half of the windows and no other debts as i didn't have a lot of equity....
My insurance is both contents and buildings - but my house is prone to subsindence so i had a nightmare getting buildings cover in the first place i checked just after xmas but i couldn't find cheaper..

i really feel like a lost cause.

Stuff the employers! Alternatively can you get bar work a couple of nights a week. Will get you out and get you money.

Would you be better reducing the rental or would someone wanitng a Monday to Thursday deal be less picky?

That's £1083, so you need to cut some and earn some. And you need car tax as well. The car was not really a good idea with your finances but what is done is done. Cna you car sare even a few days a week, so you get something back for the journey?

Join www.quidco.com and see what you can do about those insurance payments.

Is the CT over 10 months or 12 months?

If it is 10 months then you have two free months coming up and should use the money to clear one of the untilities, then see if you can swap and use www.quidco.com for cashback. Then ask the council if you can pay over 12 months to help you budget next year.

Also see if you can cut those insurance payments and get cashback via quidco.

Join your local group on www.freecycle.com.

Will find chevalier's list of pay for click and mystery shopping and survey sites. Some people reckon thay can get £50 per month that way. And you might get an old evening out.

The other thing is to have a ,look at the freebies and Money Saving Old Style forum here.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • please don't feel like a lost cause, i know it's easy for me to say but try and stay positive, every cloud has a silver lining (it's just sometimes difficult to find at first!) Big hugs.

£71 car insurance, is that per month? any chance of trimming that down some?

Any question answered (AQA) may be a way of gaining extra money without affecting your current job, there is a thread on this page on it. It's very long but worth ploughing through. Basically work as internet researcher, self employed, as and when u want.

Sorry if this is silly question, does £90 c/tax include single person discount? Can you apply to have this paid over 12 months instead of 10?

Good luck with everything, keep us updated with your progress.
Who says I have to be normal? :p
  • A lodger sounds a very good idea, when I was struggling I rented out the master bedroom ( my room short term) and stayed in the spare room, could you do that?tt
  • Thanks for the replies,
I have the single person discount and its over 11 months i get feb off from paying, it should go down in March to 70 as i had arrears to pay off.

I can't car share as no one at work lives in my area, and i tend to stay later then they do.

I am a member of freecycle - have used a few things at my carboots!

I also use freebie sites i check them all the time, tend to use them for pressies on birthdays ect. Also get free cinema tickets and other stuff occasionally.

I use some survey sites but i don't really make a lot of money, i don't get many emails - guess i don't fit the criteria

  • my room is no bigger :(

I have suggested that to people but no luck...

I have checked rent out in the area, people do seem to be charging less and getting more, but i really can't afford to do that, I know how much my bills went up with my last lodger - but he got a girlfriend and moved o

If the rooms fairly priced it will go, small house and lounge = cheap room, someone always wants a cheap room and the bills will halve - your outgoings exceed incoming this will only head for meltdown, you need to act now regardless of whether it's cold, you had a bad experience etc... Could you take the smallest room and rent the best one, declutter/depersonalise it so it looks bigger...

Also, join Slice the Pie and One Poll and do a bit each day to earn the pennies. There is a thread on the Up Your Income board about how to do Slice the Pie - basically - you get paid for reviewing music.

Here is the link for One Poll. Again, it's only a bit and it doesn't pay out until you hit £40 but it all helps

If you have a month off from council tax then you can throw this £90 at one of the debts - electric or gas maybe? Maybe also taking a couple months off the mortgage? you would then be able to clear the gas and elctric arrears and pay off the credit cards. This then frees up the £60 a month min payment to the cards, you will also have £20 less a month to spend on council tax this means you shouldn't be far from breaking even. If you earnt say £50 a month- I reckon you could do this -then that could be your treat money?
Basically your wage will just about cover youroutgoings - but treats you will need to get creative about - how about joining quidco or something and getting cashback to take out dvd rentals? free cinema tickets- there's a thread on here somewhere about that. That sort of thing. Anything you can ebay to create a small amount of treat money?
