I use
2 tblspoon dry sherry (have been known to use cinzano or other similar sweet alcohol)
1 tablespoon cornflour
4 fl oz organge juice or pineapple juice (if you open a tin then stick the chunks in for a more authentic taste)
1 table spoon ketchup or tomato puree
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon soy sauce
can also add table spoon honey if you like a more sticky effect, but reduce the amount of sugar if you do.
put everything in a bowl, you can use this as a marinade if you want. cook your main ingredient and then add the cornflour to the mix and add to the pan, it should bubble and thicken in minutes.
have to admit to having to look up the measures as I now just throw it together and taste to see if it's ok. But my two quite fussy eaters will demolish anything with this on including the rice!
Hope this helps

I do something similar to alices' mum. I often use white wine instead of the sherry and never have brown sugar so i use the honey!0

I make it in a similar way but I use white wine vinegar, tomato ketchup, sugar, pineapple juice, cornflour and soy sauce. Roughly the same amount of each (except the sugar and cornflour - I usually add a couple of teaspoons). I just mix it all together and throw it in the pan when I am stir frying.

Hi redballoon,
We have an older thread with lots of sweet and sour recipes on it, so I'll merge your thread with it as it helps to keep all the suggestions together. As always posts are listed in date order so you'll need to read from the beginning to see all the replies.

Hello all
This is my first time of posting a thread on Old Style but I have been lurking and posting for about a year.
I have tried searching but have been unable to find a recipie for sweet and sour sauce - all references seem to be with bought jars or take aways! Anyone any ideas? As my mum (who wants the recipie) is diabetic we can adapt a recipie but the shop bought ones seem full of carp.
Any help appreciated.0 -
