It has been stated in this board many, many times that you cannot be charged for calls if you press "9" on an incoming call. It is impossible to change an incoming call to an outgoing call just by pressing 9. So I just cannot see how your Gran was charged £16 . Are you sure of your facts?[/QUOTE

so if i have my facts wrong, how exactly did she get charged then, she pressed 9 to claim her "prize" and ended up paying for the call,if what you say is fact then how come she ended up with it on her phone bill? she never called them.

I've no idea how she was charged £16 but it certainly wasn't as a result of pressing 9 on an incoming call.

The original poster is quite correct, this is an urban myth been doing the rounds for ages and there is a whole thread dedicated to it somewhere.

Most likely the £16 is for a totally unrelated call.

    Hello ADAM001

Did you know that the TPS can take 28 days to become fully active? You mentioned that within days of registering with the TPS.......the sales calls continued. After 28 days these calls should stop.

If your gran gets any sales calls after 28 days, she should write down the name of the company and caller and then report them to the TPS.

    Hope that helps

The fact is if a company is calling you they may be using old paperwork that is over 3 years old.I doubt if the details will be correct if you ask for them, especially as I think the fine can be around £4000 if they are caught.

Unfortunately if someone wants to ring you then they will whether you are with tps or not.Your partner may have just been further down their list(alphabetically
If you don't change your number then they will be generally using old lists.I bet their number will be permanently blocked? You won't get calls if you ask your telephone company to include ''accept no calls from with held numbers''Another way is without a list.In our area you can call just 6 number. So someone starts with the 411111,411112 etc

I have heard similar stories that the 'press 9' and get charged a fortune was an urban legend .. try looking it up in https://www.snopes.com. I think BT did make a statement about this and, if memory serves me correctly then there was a risk if '9' is the number to dial an outside line (e.g. office phones) ... does not answer where the charge came from though

tps only stops unsolicited marketing calls so if your partner is applying for accounts etc, make sure they tick the do not contact me part on the form!! Anyone who is *allowed* to market to you, can do so, even if you are registered with tps.

    Good luck

Why do people get marketing calls?

Because they are daft enough to give their numbers out, i see it in Tescos when people hand in special offer vouchers, the operator says we need your number filled in" No they don't,but its worth more if they have it. Returning faulty items "we need your telephone number and address" No they don't!

When people ask for your phone number or a form asks for it, question why they need it, write 'ex directory' or 'refused'. I don't give my number out, i'm not registered with TPS and i NEVER receive unsolicited calls.

If i beleive a company needs my number for example to arrange delivery then i state that 'the number is only to be used in relation to that order'

I have told friends about this, they have been more circumspect about giving out their telephone numbers and lo and behold their calls decrease over the next few months, if your name is on a list somewhere though it could go round but with a bit of luck as the companies buy fresh lists, you'll drop out.

Stand firm - don't fell you have to give away your number just because somebody asks for it-it's your privacy your giving up. ;)

Who doesnt record calls today. Had a recent case with a credit card company, and when i complained, they listened to the conversation, and were amazed at how i was spoken to by their staff. The person concerned would be spoken to!! yeh right?

Literature nowadays always normally states calls mabe be recorded or monitored for quality purposes/training.
