    Hello ADAM001

Did you know that the TPS can take 28 days to become fully active? You mentioned that within days of registering with the TPS.......the sales calls continued. After 28 days these calls should stop.

If your gran gets any sales calls after 28 days, she should write down the name of the company and caller and then report them to the TPS.

    Hope that helps

yes,my grans previous number was also registered but when i contacted bt they said that because a lot of these calls were from outside the UK they could do little about it,she was (at 83) gullible enough to press 9 to continue and was duely charged 16quid for her trouble,i explained this to bt but they basically said they wouldnt refund her and it was her look out.
Nice to see bt have the elderlys interest at heart!

It has been stated in this board many, many times that you cannot be charged for calls if you press "9" on an incoming call. It is impossible to change an incoming call to an outgoing call just by pressing 9. So I just cannot see how your Gran was charged £16 . Are you sure of your facts?
What part of "A whop bop-a-lu a whop bam boo" don't you understand?

But if it's due to a line fault then BT agree to pick up the cost. That's what happened when some idiot engineer from BT cut my line.

On 2 or 3 occasions when my phone line has been down, BT have offered to divert calls to a mobile. They never mentioned anything about cost so I asked them. They told me that I wouldn't have to pay. Being naturally suspicious (I know it's unkind but this is through experience) I checked with them that unlike with BT Call Divert they would in this case be paying for the diverted part of each call - not just for setting it up! In each case they confirmed that it would not cost me anything either for setting it up or for any calls received.

If the OP had the calls diverted by BT because of a line fault, then BT should pay for the diverts and if they were not prepared to pay for them, they should have made it clear. Hopefully the recorded conversation will help sort this out though. If the diverts were not because of a line fault but were a case of using the BT Call Divert facility, then it's a different matter since although they don't make a big issue of the costs, it's bound to be in the terms for the service.

Useless piece of info but if you live in NI all you incomming and out going calls are scanned and listened into by BT and have been for years. You always hear the click, not so with NTL.

I very very much doubt that to be true - who on earth would pay the wage bill for tens of thousands of staff to sit there listening into millions of calls a day?

They are scanned as they are looking for key words for terrorist activity. its well known in NI
  • From what I can gather, this only applies if you are on a 'watch list' anyway - no different from a normal bug used in any country.

The technology to monitor every single conversation for keywords simply doesn't exist, and if it did it would be the government doing it, not BT.

To me, on the basis of what you said, surely any terrorist would simply become an NTL customer instead?

I think somebody is pulling your leg - I can understand certain terrorists/criminals being monitored but poor old Mrs Ardle ordering her meals-on-wheels is probably of little interest - unless they have 'bombe surprise' on the menu :D Jeez, if they started monitoring my calls I reckon the suicide rate would go up out of sheer boredom.

Maybe they talk in coded signals ... 'Mr Rabbit has laid his egg in the nest and is returning to the pub to meet Jemima Puddleduck' :D

However, I wonder what they do about checking up on email and web surfing habits. They must be doing some monitoring otherwise they would not be able to catch all the paedophiles? I know that it is the ISPs that do much of the monitoring but you wonder if Big Brother monitors

so if i have my facts wrong, how exactly did she get charged then, she pressed 9 to claim her "prize" and ended up paying for the call,if what you say is fact then how come she ended up with it on her phone bill? she never called them.
