I'd definately get on the www.taxcc.org site (done in big for all to spot)..............I know me and whitevanwoman ;) keep banging on about the site but it really really really really IS the best place to go, it's FREE, it's sympathetic, it's helpful!!!

Without the hardworking volunteers at www.taxcc.org I would've had a break down about it all by now, and wouldn't be in the strong powerful position I am in now. HMRC are trying to lie about a phone call I made to them and worm their way out of THEIR mistake.................now I trusted them and wouldn't have known how to go about fighting for my innocence without the guidance and support of the Tax Credit Casualties site EVERYBODY HERE SHOULD GO THERE, honestly nobody here can help any of you like they can there, all we can give here is a bit of sympathy and bleat on about our own experiences, but the cases are very individual and need more specialist help
They are all complete gems over there and have saved my sanity more than once now!!! Be patient though as they are people like you and me with their own long lasting problems with HMRC!

Thanks I'll read that tomorrow. I first got a bill for £1,778 and then after I rang, they said they missed out my son and I shouldn't owe any money. The time they are talking about is when I was with my ex and we had it in joint names. A couple of months later I get a bill for nearly £700. Well I know my ex isn't going to pay his share so I'm going to be stuck the bill. It just doesn't seem fair as I've told them all the changes as it happened and then years later a big bill on the doorstep.

I had a bill that I am now paying it back at £20 per month. Call them and tell them you want to appeal, they will go through your outgoings with you and you can then come to a monthly arrangement, I suggest you make a list first so that you have the answers in front of you. I appealed 3 times in the end and my bill was reduced from £3000 to £1500!!! yep pretty scarey and really upsetting when I claimed the credits in all good faith.
I still am furious every time I think about it. They have set up an incompetent, dreadful system that is penalising vulnerable people like us - divorced with kids - I now am about half way through paying it all off.
    Good Luck!!

I renewed my credits on the 29th July, my payment this week jumped up massively yet they said nothing on the phone and I have had no letter as yet. I dont think they know what they are doing still as I asked when on the phone about amounts etc and was told they could not tell me!! Mad how they can play with us like this. I sincerly wish all those fighting/appealing the best of luck.

btw am not spending the extra sent even though its most welcome - wont hurt to save it until I know its ok.

2 years ago they overpaid me £1800 i called them 6 times to ask why lump sum were they sure ect yes yes yes so paid off overdraft and cancelled the facility bar £500 for emergencys! then i get a letter we overpaid you you need to give it back (gulp) several phonecalls and tears later they agreed to take back minimum from my weekly payments as of third tuesday in october this year im clear of debt with them and will not accept lump sums again. Tax credits are a joke! if we didnt need the money to survive i would wash my hands of it hubby often tells me its not worth the hassle

Hi, just trying to find something on the issue of Tax Credit over payments as we rcvd quite a useful lump sum (3,000+) a couple of weeks. We immediately thought it must be a mistake so my wife rang to check. they said, yes it was all present and correct - no problem! So yippee :j into our (Small but now slightly bigger) savings it goes.....

Then, yesterday we receive the Tax Credit paperwork which somehow shows my income as practically zero over the previous tax year (I'm self employed). How on earth they came to that conclusion I don't know, our accounts were completed as normal through our usual accountant and, although my profits were down, it certainly didnt equate to the figure they've come up with?

So, once we have double checked with our accountant, we will have to ring them to clarify and no doubt correct what has got to be an error on their part, though it is tempting just to leave it especially having already queried the amount with them.

Whilst we are not going to lose sleep over this it is a pain in the botooom to have to run around fixing their apparent mistakes especially if it means parting with £3000 which we were originally assured was ours to keep. It sure makes you wonder if they know what they are doing or is the system just too complex? Or perhaps both?
  • After years of ignoring their persistant letters & phone calls we filled in the forms just to get them off our backs ,but we knew we earned to much to get credits.
We have just had our letter from the the Tax Credit People saying we were over paid by £372 last year, so they are taking this money this year.

How the hell can we have been overpaid when we were not paid any credits in the first place.
Now we have to sort this mess out.
Spoke to a very nice lady on the Phone & she Can't work out how we owe them when their records say we have never received any Tax Credits.

Our advice is stay away from Tax Credits unless you really need them.

Just out of interest if you do have a tax credit overpayment and you agree its an overpayment etc.

Whats the minium they will except to repay them??

The overpayment is about £700.00 from 2004. *rolls eyes*

The claimant is still receiving tax credits can they not just take deductions for that award OR do you have to pay them separate?

  • I find it really confusing all round, the forms are hideous and don't make too much sense and I am fairly bright. I am told this time that I owe them £800 even though I kept them up to date fully with all changes...so I just don't understand but the forms don't shed much light, I think its done on purpose so you just pay it off as instructed without questioning it as how can you question it if you don't understand how they come up with these figures?
