And why shouldn't new systems be backwards compatible and run old software?

Because everyone complained about how insecure XP is so MS wrote Vista to be more secure which meant that a lot of poorly written apps (mainly those that accessed the kernel space and/or would only work on an admin account) broke.

A lot of XPs security problems are caused by trying to maintain backwards compatibility.

Even with MS money to activate it you have to right click and run as administrator even if your user is an administrative one! Catch themselves out sometimes!

Could I just ask why you are asking about defender. My installed AV has just finished and I am now adding new defence to my Vista laptop. So far have only added AVG but have defender running too - is it no good?

Defender is Anti-Spyware not Anti-Virus. It's not the best Anti_Spyware in the world but it runs in the backgorund all the time and can catch some spyware. Ijust wondered if Totalsolutions had switched it off or not.

Personally I'd leave defender running as it won't do any harm and may catch the odd nasty.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
