Tiscali Broadband

Finally got connected on Tiscali ADSL after spending many years on NTL without many problems. Moved house into a non-cabled area so Im stuck with ADSL now!

One thing I have noticed, which is annoying the hell out of me, is the having to sign in before you are connected. Is it possible to have it connected when the computer boots?

Im going to get a wireless ADSL router, will the "sign in before being connected" be a problem? Or will the router store the details and keep a connection 24/7 even if the computer is turned off?

TIA.

The router will reamin logged in at all times, so your problem goes away.

Ive noticed the line disconnects every 5-6 hours so I have to re-connect. I think its a hardware problem as the adsl modem they provided seems cheapest bidder kind of thing?

    How long have you got?

When its working fine, theyre fine.

When its not, their customer service is appalling, their technical support is non existent, the two groups dont speak to each other, they order BT surveys and dont act on the survey results, they dont respond to your emails, they dont even respond to emails sent as a part of their complaints process.

And why did it all go wrong.......because they did an "upgrade" that they said would result in a loss of service for an hour or so, but they knackered my service for months.

I referred my case to the Otelo Ombudsman, who has recently found in my favour.......looking forward to receiving my compensation Tiscali if youre reading this.

Theres a website (theres a link to it somewhere on this site) that details problems with ISPs, and Tiscali always seem to be top of the pops.

Sounds like it could be same problem as mine......provision of a line with a speed faster than the length of your line from the exchange can handle. If you splash out on a Wireless Modem Router, it will make it worse as the standard ADSL modems seem to be more tolerant of a poor line than the more functional ones. Mine wouldnt even sync the line was so poor.....but now its back to a good old 512K, its working fine again.

    Hi Guys,

I too have made the mistake of going for tiscali, and guess what, I've got problems. I was initialy quite impressed when I was connecting at 2.3m, when I was only paying for 512k.

My connection is being dropped regularly (i'm talking minutes) and then I can't get back on again (no dial tone apparently). I'm also getting an error compalining about other apps using my usb bandwidth (even though i've unplugged everything but the modem).

Here's the best bit, when my connection is lost, the only was I can reconnect is to lift the handest on my telephone, and as the nice BT lady tells me to 'replace my handset & try again', my broadband suddenly reconnects. Only problem here is that if I replace the handset, I lose my connection again.

I'm also getting lots of interferance on the telephone (you can here the modem doing it's stuff in the background)

I've been on to the helpline (several times), and finally got them to get my line tested, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Any ideas on what I could ask them to do to try and resolve the issue?

For anyone interested. Take a look around the net about Tiscali. They are currently the most complained about ISP in the UK (followed by bulldog). Most complaints seem centred on their customer service, although they also seem to have many service problems with a lot of people.

I had trouble cancelling with this company a few years ago. I cancelled and they still sent out bills. I didn't know because I had stopped using the tiscali email address and had cancelled my payments to them through the bank. I first knew there was a problem when I received a letter from a debt collection company. After reviewing my case and receiving many many similar complaints, even the debt collection company refused to carry on with the order to collect. They sent back hundreds of cases to Tiscali, including mine. It was only when I gave them notice that my solicitor was getting involved, that they 'realised' that they were in the wrong.

This company should be avoided by any means!
