you could ring round post offices in the area who would be able to tell you.

Post Offices are not actually supposed to do that as the codes are there to prevent fraud.

Does he not have a bank account he can pay it in to?

It's doubtful they will tell him over the phone, he could be anyone with that Giro and asking for that information.
It is also doubtful that the post office will tell him either.

If he can answer security questions after giving his national insurance number they won't have a problem telling him the post office to cash it at

A very late reply but this thread cracks me up. He has no job, no landline, no money whatsoever, I'm assuming doesnt drive then as you say he'll have to walk a number of miles to get to a post office.

    What on earth?

    (sorry, no offense)

    Call the Jobcentre?!

It would be the Post Office that he wrote on the application form.

Its not always the one you write on your form, this happened to me and it was a PO local to the DWP office who sent it, 26 miles away. The jobcentre told us this often happens.
  • I thought the DWP was stopping giros and you now have to have either a Post office account or a bank account to get your money.

  • Same thing happened to me with the cold weather payments. Received two giro's with mysterious code on them. No idea where to cash them as we seriously don't have a local post office anymore.., they've all been closed down. Spent an hour trying to phone the benefits office.., I pay to go thru two different menus, to have the income support line engaged when I finally get through.

Why they've sent a giro is beyond me. They send payments directly to my bank for everything else and yes, I don't have any cash so its a two mile jaunt to go into the centre of town in the hope that the centre of town post office will be the right one. Its equally far to walk to the 'nearest' post office.., with two children, with no idea if its either of these two. Phoned two post offices and they won't tell me which one it is. I could well end up walking into the centre of town and then out to the 'nearest' PO again lolol.

Yes, could pay it into my bank, but again, means a walk into the centre of town and then waiting 5 working days til it hits my bank.

Yes its extra money., but how hard would it have been to have just paid it into my account lol?

    So .., rather frustrating.
  • I googled "Post Office FAD codes" and I found a branch finder - I'm a new user so not allowed to post links but wanted to pass on what I'd found.

if you find a time machine to go back to 2008 when the question was asked then I'm sure they'd find it useful :rotfl:
