Hi, maria, as you will have read from other posters you can add your surname to your daughters making it a double barreled one, you can put whichever surname you want first (your daughter can eventually just not use the surname she does not want) My sister was in the same situation as you and she did this with her son who when he went to uni just dropped his father's surname. But to make it all 'legal' it would be better if you made the double barrelled surname 'offical' with a change by deed poll.
Hope everything works out well for you.

Just to point out to anyone reading this thread, it is against the law to change the name of a minor without the permission of everybody who has parental responsibility, so if her father says no then that means no.
I know plenty women ignore that but some have been prosecuted and let off with a slap on the wrist but it does mean that they have a criminal conviction.

I don't understand why you say some places require the Deed pool to be signed by a solicitor as my daughter changed her name herself using an online template and it was accepted everywhere including passport office, DVLA and bank. You really don't need to pay anyone for it just buy some good quality paper and print it. hth

Are there any other differences in Scotland?
  • There is an article on the Guardian website which explains the whole deed poll thing. Not able to post link as new user. But it's called "Deed poll websites to avoid".

Basically you can do it for free on the government website or the freedeedpoll website that somebody set up because they were mad about being ripped off.

If you get married I think you have to do a deed poll it you are having a double-barrelled name, but not if you are just taking your husband's name.

For passport purposes you don't need a change of name deed for a double barrelled name. A marriage certificate showing both names will be enough.
