Well Miele are one of the best makes, closely followed by Siemens, but they are pricey, from around £550 up to around £1k.

Also, Whirlpool is a very good make that I can recommend, having had my previous washer dryer for 12+ years without a single problem.

Unfortunately I couldn't quite stretch to another Whirlpool this time round, so have settled for a Zanussi which was on offer at John Lewis & came with a 2yr guarantee. I've only had it a week & am very pleased with it so far, but will it live anywhere near as long as my Whirlpool without a problem I wonder.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.
  • Thanks Cattie for the advice, we don't know much about washer dryers so this really helps :)

I've owned 3 washer dryers. I had a Zanussi for about 10 years and it worked very well. I would have bought another but it was slightly too deep kitchen.

I had a Hotpoint for 3years which was a disaster - it broke down several times and the 5 year parts guarantee is a great idea but you pay £90 for each repair and I had to wait 6 weeks for a part to become available. AVOID!

I'm now the owner of a Bosch. It's the best machine I've had in 2 respects. The wash performance - particularly the thorough rinsing - is outstanding. It also does a 40 degree cotton load in 1 hour 8 mins which by modern machine standards is relatively quick. It also has automatic drying which leaves the clothes perfectly dry and fluffy (even at the lowest setting the Hotpoint's automatic drying left the laundry crispy dry).

I'm sure that a Miele would be the best machine I could buy but I could buy 2 Bosch machines for the same price. The Bosch comes with a 2 year guarantee as standard.
  • I can tell you which not to buy - Indesit.

I had one for 2 years and it broke down 3 times.
Even the repairer told me to avoid them.

I'm also the proud owner of a Bosch washer/dryer. I've had no problems in 5 years :D

We bought Hoover washer and dryer and they both broke down repeatedly in the first six months. I ended up Freecycling them and buying Bosch, which have been OK.

I've lived in rented houses where the white goods have been included so I've not ever had a say in the choosing process - but that hasn't stopped me forming opinions! Had 2 Zanussi's both fantstic & 2 Hoptpoints both awful and unreliable. I would choose a Zanussi and I've also heard good reports about Bosch and Meile but they are a bit more expensive especially the Meile.

Amen to that. Mine's broken again today. Breaks every two months since we bought it. When it last broke in Nov/Dec we found it was out of the 12 month guarantee, so were faced with either paying out £90 for each repair (we had the 5 year parts warantee too), or buying the extended warantee because at that time of year we couldn't just buy a new one.

I can't WAIT to get it out of my house.

(I just checked my posting history and see that it last broke around 8th December. Different fault this time. Now the dryer is putting water in so the clothes come out wetter than they did after spinning! I never overload the drum, and still haven't caught up on the washing from last time. Since last time I've only been doing one or two loads a week.

Miele seem to be the best around in all I have read. Try www.washerhelp.co.uk they have lots of helpful articles about washing machines.
If you have a problem fix it, if you can't fix it don't worry because it will happen anyway! :D
  • Siemens white goods are rebadged Bosch products with digital display and a 20% price Premium.
The Parent company BSH Home appliences also includes NEFF.
    http://www.bsh-group.com/index.php?page=1026

Their goods are all made in the same factory and is very reliable and top quality.
Like has been Said above, only Miele are better.
I used to work for Siemens and have a Fridge\freezer Washing Machine and Dishwasher that i bought on staff discount in 2003 and not had one problem with either.

Just getting a new kitchen in and i have bought Siemens Appliences wherever possible as it is the best i could afford.
Well i couldnet afford it, but i managed to get a staff discount despite no longer working for the company.

I have had two Hoover washer dryers, the first one lasted 12 years and my current one i have had for about 7 years and is still working great now, if it went tomorrow i would definately get another Hoover!!!
