If you're really stuck for backup you can always try backing stuff up online. There's lots of free space out there (if you have a lot of stuff it may take a while to upload). There's a few links on the backup sticky in the board.

The actual components come off the same assembly line though, i.e. the chips are all the same. They'll reserve the higher more stable chips for the higher end functions and split up the production that way but that's simply down to natural variance in the manufacturing process rather than them actually setting up different fabs for different markets. The assembly is all that's different and that's where the (legitimate) expense comes in which is why I said if you wanted home pcs built like servers it'd be far more expensive. To shift the home market to the higher end stuff does mean an improvement in the same manufacturing process which would mean greater run in time of that particular line which in turn means we'd be using much older technologies. It's the demand for better processors etc that pushes the manufacturing into the edge of diminishing returns on yields and yield quality. When I say components I'm talking about the chips etc whereas you're talking about the stage after that with assembly of the chips onto the boards and I don't dispute those products are different. And the key thing is that they're different not that they're improved versions of the home market products and the architecture is specifically set for a different purpose. I completely agree with everything in your post, but it wasn't my point.

What you're saying counts for processors to a point, yeah, but only really different models of the same level of chip.

The current dual core Xeons aren't just C2Ds that came out of the fab being capable of higher clock speeds due to variances in the manufactoring process, they have more cache and are SMP capable.

That's true but obviously if you wanted the same architecture for a home cpu then the expense comes with that, it's still not a case of "improving manufacture" to get home chips to be the same as server chips, the manufacturing processes and reliabilities are all the same. I've been to a few fabs, they don't have separate or different manufacturing techniques for the different markets. The OP's point was that there was some fundamental difference in the reliabity in manufacturing of components for the different markets. But simply putting a little more money in won't suddenly make server architecture of the current generation cheap enough for home use or make the home version architectures any more reliable.

Thanks for the help, although once you start recording TV and other multimedia the gb soon mount up. Might soon exceed my broadband reasonable limits...

That's true, I had in the back of my mind your mention of media and that would certainly be something that would make it an impractical solution, but it's still something you could use to backup up everything else, such as docs, email and settings.

Just received a reply from Dell who are saying I can keep the HDD. No news about the caddy I wanted to enable me to use it.

I am suprised at the response from some people on this forum. I dont want a new PC I want the one I bought to work without problems. As it didnt it causes me time and bother. A 250gb hard drive is small compensation in my mind. As it goes if I went for the refund option I would probably have been financially better off (current deals are better than when I orderered it).

If getting a caddy for a SATA II drive and getting it running is easy then this outcome is ok. Now which drive is it? PC has two drives, doubt it will have C and D written on the side!
  • May I ask which Dell model is involved?

That will sort your data recovery problems out

Ah but Dell won't compensate him for the "expense" :D
