I need some help here, both my gas and elec are with BG. I have now gone from one extreme to the other, whereas i only rwead my meter once in a blue moon, now i'm looking at it everyday. What scares me, and i think i've got my maths right is that i am using about 4 units of gas a day(about 126KWh ?)
and 50:eek: KWh of elec. I work that out at around £4 per day for gas and £7 per day for elec (38 dayunits 12 night)
Please someone tell me i have it wrong.

What are you using to use 50kWh per day? Do you have an immersion heater permanently on?

Combi Boiler for CH
Elec cooker with fan oven, Oil filled rad in conservatory apart from that the normal run of things, 2 tellys, W/M, Dishwsher(always on at night) Elec shower in use 4 x a day, computer, hair straighteners not so much now 1 daughter gone curly,
My suspicions are study, kitchen and girls rooms have these multi spot light fittings, have fitted them all with 35watts as opposed to the normal 50 watters 27 x 35/50watts in total ? ?
Elec shower ?
Think i'll buy some candles !0 -
The UK average for gas is 20,500 per year. Obviously most of that gets used in the winter for heating. - I use 72% of my gas in the 6 months Oct-Mar.
4 gas units are 126kWh if you have an Imperial meter(measures in cubic feet) but only approx 33kWh if you have a metric meter - measures in cubic metres.
But even 126kWh a day in January is not excessive. Also you are probably looking at the price of the initial units you use in a quarter(called tier 1) to make that come to £4. Few people pay more than 2.5p/kWh for the majority of their gas(tier 2) and that comes to about £3 a day.
Your problem is electricity!!
The UK average is 3,300kWh per year and at 50kWh per day your are in line to use 6 times that amount.
The first thing to ask yourself is why are you on an Economy 7 tariff?(cheap rate at night)
Using 24% at cheap rate almost certainly means that you would be better off on a normal daytime tariff. Although your night units are cheaper, you pay more for all your daytime units and the extra you spend for daytime units is probably more than you save on the night units.
However 50kWh a day is unbelievably high.
The culprit is unlikely to be your spot lights. Even if you have all 27 on, they will use less than 1kWh each hour.
I would think the thing to look at is your oil filled rad - if you leave that on all the time in a conservatory(poor insulation) it will use huge amounts.
Long showers also will use a lot - a 10 min shower approx 1.5 kWh.
Also I believe you are using the tier 1 price for electricity. On E7 depending where you live you should be pay around 10p for tier 2 and 3p-4p for night rate. That should be around £4 a day not £7 - still too high!!0 -
I know the talk at the moment is not to switch for a few weeks, but i am thinking it might still be worth my while.
We had an extension a couple of years back, and part of that was replacing the boiler with a combi, so you are right i have no real need for economy 7 the only thing we use at night is the dishwasher.
I will check when i get home about the gas meter but again i think that is prob not too bad for winter.0 -

ok its no wonder i'm in debt.
just gone thru my old figures
03-04 13,429 units used
04-05 11,234 " "
05-06 10,880 " "
06-07 10,282 " "
That equates to 3 times the uk average :eek::eek:0 -

So time to investigate why!
If you are using that amount it really can only be heating of some sort.
I still have an Economy 7 meter(albeit I am not on Economy 7) and my nightly usage is approx 3 units in the 7 cheap rate hours, and that is with 2 freezers and a fridge and someone who is always up very early. For you to use 12 units???
I suggest you start monitoring carefully to see where it is being used.0 -

Baesd on this your consumption seems consistent potentially ruling out errors in bill/readings, meter faults etc.
So as others have said you need to do an energy efficiency review on your property. There are plenty of sites via Google on energy efficiency that might help.:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0
