New Boiler - Advice please.

Hallo - Our boiler was condemned today - ooh! doesn't it sound dramatic. British Gas are coming round to give me a quote for a new one in a couple of days, but i know it will be pricey. Any tips on how to reduce the cost - but safety comes first of course. Also we're hoping to move in the next year or so and wouldn't want to have something installed that would put people off.
Thanking you.

Not use BG? Just use a standard Corgi registered installer.0 -
How do you know they're any good tho? None of my friend have anyone to recommend so I'm a bit nervous of just finding one in the yellow pages. I know I'm beeing feeble - just worried about spending a lot of money on something that's not 100%.

The quote from British Gas will be high. Expect a bill of around £4K
Your best bet it to get a local plumber (Corgi Reg) to do it. We recently has a new system installed and had a range of quotes. Whilst our situation might not be norm (Completely new install, Borsh Combi Boiler and 3 old style rads), it cost us £2.5K.
However, this wasn't the cheapest quote. We chose our installer because of his location (he lives 20 yards from our house) and we know he's not moving soon as his wife tells us so when we meet her in the local shop! She even made him return to sweep up! (he told her that he'd forgot and she sent him back:rotfl:)0 -
Had 3 quotes recently , although would guess the job was larger than average replacement
all around £4K and one of those was from BG
Others recommended Worcester Bosch, , whereas BG receommended a smaller own branded version of Worcester BoschAny posts on here are for information and discussion purposes only and shouldn't be seen as (financial) advice.0 -

I've had a 5 week fiasco with British Gas trying to get them to fix my boiler.
Anyway, when chatting to the engineers they recommended Valiant as the best and they said it is easier to fault find on the Valient boilers.
The engineer also said that there is an offer from them of gas vouchers for £1000 when installing a new boiler so I am getting a quote from them next week.
Last time I had a quote it was horrendously high and the salesman expected all the pipework from the gas main up to the expansion tank to be replaced. This would have torn up half the house. Since then all the British Gas engineers I have spoken to have said it is not neccesary to replace all the pipework. Only the pipes from boiler to cylinder need to be replaced.
Hope this helps and let us know how you get on.0 -
I know someone who works for brit gas and even he can't believe the prices they charge. Much cheaper to get a local Corgi Registered Installer (you can find one here : http://www.trustcorgi.com/consumers.htmx ) to give you a price for installation only and then buy the goods yourself. try https://www.theheatingshop.co.uk or similar site and save yourself some money. Thats what I done and then got my brit gas mate to fit it in his own time a lot cheaper than if he done it for british gas..0

In my experience British Gas and other large companies charge a forture.
I was quoted between £2500 and £3000 + VAT by the larger companies I got round for a new boiler.
Go with a local guy then ask how much for cash, you'll probably get it for £1400 all in.0 -

At this moment I'm at home having my Glowworm boiler that I bought from British Gas being reparied for the 8th time! It was installed February 2008, thats right 2008. I am tat he point where I am going to cancel the finance agreement ,borrow some money and buy a Valiant to be fitted by a CORGI registered fitter. Do not use BG, they are not only expensive but the workmanship is not good. I am going to get legal advice to seek compensation for lost work days, added builders costs etc0
