  • Yes it is, and the regs only say you need 270mm.

The loft insulation is patchy - 30mm in parts and 300mm elsewhere. As there is three generations of assorted rubbish up there that will take at least a month of Sundays to sort through and throw out. I am from a family of hoarders.

A three bed house built to todays regulations should only require between 3 and 5 KW of heat energy @ 21 deg C/-3 deg C.

    Really?

    Care to substantiate this?

If our stubborn old dinosaur architects and Builders / developers step into the 21st century and look at the new building regulations and the building materials and insulation around today and lower their greedy profits and stop wacking up estate after estate of 'this is ya choice... 'the 2/3 Bed leaks like a seive expensive to run carp' or ya '4 bed heap of leftover bricks pattern style rubbish with an inadequate heating system' then it will be possible to heat the 2/3 bed with a 5kW system........after all my 8.5 kW system replaced an 18kW oil boiler.

Ok, taken on board, but 8.5kw is not 3-5kw is it? ....and @ -3c

evening thechippy, I think what side was getting at was if new builds are going to be insulated to death and airtight with MVHR as the 2010 B regs state then it is quite possible that it will need minimum heating, if we are to ever get to zero carbon house by 2016 or whenever it is, we need to move through transitional stages...there are better systems comming on the market.....I saw the monoblock the other day it got to 80 degrees in less than 20 minutes with a cascade refrigerant circuit....3kW to heat a newbuild will be easy!!

I have a NIBE Fighter 2005 air source heat pump that the manual at
    http://www.nibeonline.com/pdf/511517-5.pdf
says reqires up to 1750 cubic metres of air an hour. I have this in a single car garage and have drilled holes in the door to feed the required air. But have I drilled enough holes ?

How can I work out the area in square metres that is required to feed 1750 cubic metres an hour without the motor straining ?

You have to remember the air doesn't disappear it will just keep on re circulating and you garage will get colder and colder and you heat pump will become less efficient! To counter act this you will need a very well ventilated garage, I would suggest you put it outside if possible.
