HI hope i'm in the right place.
We have a tv licence - in my name.
My husband bought us a new tv from catalogue in Dec.
He has had a letter saying "we know you bought a tv but no licence is in your name"
Surely if they just checked the address they would see that the house is covered by tv licence??
Or am i wrong??
I had the same problem when my OH bought a freeview box for his mum.
He got a letter from the tv licence people stating that they knew he had bought tv recieving equipment. and there was no record of him having a tv licence.i telephoned them up and explained that the licence was paid by DD and was in my name.
The guy said he was sorry and that it was a mistake. He said he could see on the screen that there was a valid licence at our address but in my name....'Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle'0 -

That is typical of the domineering, bullying attitude of TV Licensing !
You do NOT need a TV licence to be in possession of a Freeview box .0 -
When they "enforcement officers" knock on your door, simply answer the door whilst smoking (or pretending to!), they probably won't be able to enter on health and safety grounds!0

i bought a freeview box from sainsburys last week and they didnt ask me for any details whatsoever. were they supposed too???0

My daughter has no TV and gets regular calls from licencing dept, they now know her and put the flat down as empty on their paperwork, this means it in only checked twice a year instead of every month. By checked I mean the paperwork rises to the top of the pile or the computer equivalent.0

If an enforcement officer does knock on your door, you could ask them to wait while you draft a note withdrawing their common law right to cross your property to get to your front door. Then you might get peace from future visits.
Note that the BBC freedom of information people say that where there is reason to believe that a crime has been committed, other means will then be used. I assume that this would include the possibility of detection equipment, With no TV at the property that should be less bothersome than a person at the door waking up a shift worker, say.
In the event that a magistrate somehow grants a warrant anyway, you could always decline access to the person seeking entry. They will probably then seek police assistance, which you should freely comply with. No reason to cooperate with people who are harassing you.
Stopping the letters seems impossible. It appears that you have to accept the invasion of your privacy of letting a stranger into your home at a time of their choosing to do that and even then it won't last long. Seems better just to withdraw the right of access presumption and accept the regular letter harassment.
Also according to the FOIA people they don't keep as much information about properties and communication with those who don't need a license as with those who do, so their systems seem designed in a way that maximises the harassment level for those who aren't required to have a license, disregarding the past communications.
The above is only intended for those who do not require a TV license.0 -

I brought a Freeview box from Tesco the other week and they didn't ask my details however a few months back I ordered a portable DVD player and a new video from Littlewoods ... A few weeks later I received letters from TVLA saying that they knew I had purchased such equipment from Littlewoods and that I must now purchase a TV Licence. The irony is that I did have a TV Licence and it had the same surname on as the letters they had just sent me ....The only difference was a middle intital :happylove Tori Bellatrix :happylove
