Part P rewire problem - Electricians please help!

Due to my ignorance, a while ago I had a house rewired. The electrician was recommended and is a qualified electrician. However, I didn't realise that the laws in place required them to be a "competent person" to self certify or I need building regs to come out and certify the work. So the situation I am in is that I have an "illegal" yet completed installation. Of course, I know where I have gone wrong now (the benefit of hindsight and all that) but the problem is, I don't know how to rectify the problem. Can I get another competent person to come and certificate the property? If I contact building regs now to get retrospective certification am I am going to open a can of worms?
Any help would be appreciated because it worries me that I have done something wrong.

As it was "a whils ago" maybe it was before the new regulations came into force?0

Hi, it was 12 months ago so definitely after the new regs came in I am afraid to say.economiser wrote: »As it was "a whils ago" maybe it was before the new regulations came into force?0

I believe that another electrician will not or certainly should not sign off someone elses work. Would you be able to get a periodic inspection report on the property from a reputable firm which has part p certification? This will test the electrics in the property and flag up anything which is not up to current regulations.
I hope I have got this right, but please check it out - It has been known (on many occassions!) that I am totally wrong and a complete blonde! lolC Card £5218.68 (Feb 2011)£2 coins (No 085) - £190Mort overpayments 2011 - £418.060 -
Thanks, I just want to get it back to be 100% correct but I don't think an inspection report will be enough to get past the fact it hasn't been done right in the first place. So flaming annoying as I am a dotter of I's and a crosser of T's and was just "ignorant". I will take any flack anyone wants to give me if I can find a route to get it sorted properly.Nutty_Tart wrote: »I believe that another electrician will not or certainly should not sign off someone elses work. I would expect this sort of thing happens a lot - not everyone is aware of current regulations so don't beat yourself up over it. I am sure a couple of phone calls to local electrical firms would point you in the right direction. If 2 or 3 say the same thing you should be on the right lines. If you feel you are not getting anywhere, try the NICEIC or equivalent - they should have a solution, hopefully without opening the 'can of worms' we all like to avoid. Good luck xC Card £5218.68 (Feb 2011)£2 coins (No 085) - £190Mort overpayments 2011 - £418.060

Thank you very much, I might just do exactly as you suggest. I am sure it is common, it's just not something I feel comfortable with and want to get it sorted.0

Your local authority may come out and certify the work for a fee - a few hundred pounds.0

Thanks but might they come after me and the electrician with a big stick for having done it wrong in the first place? And might they want to rip some of the house up because they might need to see the wires etc? My understanding is that they normally come at first fix and second fix stage if done properly so before the chased wires are buried and before floorboards are back down etc.Your local authority may come out and certify the work for a fee - a few hundred pounds.0

It cant hurt to give them a ring - just dont tell them who you are!
Explain your situation and see what they say, they maybe more accomodating than you expect.0 -
Thanks very much, I am going to have to ring someone to find out the worst case scenario. Hopefully they won't give a toss but knowing my luck they will tell me I am going to tarred and feathered! It cant hurt to give them a ring - just dont tell them who you are!
