There will be no fine/penalty/charge for negligence/interest/fraud charges/jail sentances/anthing. If you just get the £10/wk, they will use your £10/wk to repay the overpayment, and once its been paid back they will restart your bank payments. Its as simple as that. And the problems with tax credits are largely nothing to do with the staff - in fact, a lot of the staff also claim tax credits, and so can see things from both sides. And yes, there are staff with overpayments too!

I doubt that will happen. All they will do is tell you how much you have been overpaid and adjust your paymetns accordingly. Happens all the time with me as I notify of changes and they don't amend. STOP STRESSING!!
payment will defintly stop(i can cope with that) and will be lucky to get £300 next year, which isnt a hassle my own fault,i just want it over and done with so i know where i stand, and i can get on with my life

  • Please try not to worry. Maybe head it off and call them on Monday to ask for an update.

  • Now your going in circles. Yes they should have contacted you but they havent and dont give a fig thats its upsetting you. You cant control them just prompt so please get your wife to call on Monday and accept you are having to do more than you should do due to their imcompetance.

  • I have exactly the same problem this yr! They say they never received any of my letters, and from all the calls I made, they seem to have ignored me when I told them my income was increasing. I have therefore been over paid in the yr 06/07 and am crapping myself about what to do if they want all the money back!
I have been advised that if they send you a letter saying you have been overpaid significantly, offer them £20 a month (or a low payment you can afford) and tell them that it would put you in financial distress to pay any more. Tell them that when your financial position increases that you will increase your payments (they dont have to know that you have no intention about doing this), and apparently they have to accept it.

As you still get tax credits now, they will take back the overpayment from the payments you get now. If you only get £10/wk they will take it all & you won't get any tax credits for a while. If you have a v low income and so have a high tax credit award they will take 10%. Ortherwise they will take 25%. The sooner you tell them, the sooner you can get things sorted out.

That happened to me.I made a genuine mistake when i gave them the wrong information regarding my husbands annual income. After i received a letter from them re my award notice, i contacted them to tell them that i had made a mistake. They had paid me an extra £1500 so they informed me that i wouldnt receive any tax credits until the money was paid back.I only get the basic amount per month and have been paying this back since sept 05 and will have finally repaid it back come sept 08.
