I used to put my dogs into kennels until i found a lady who does home from home boarding in her own house. Would highly reommend it. Not overly expensive and the dogs get plently of walks and cuddles! It's called Marie's and you will find it in the yellow pages. It is based in Newtownards.

I think this is it, If you head towards Ards from Clandeboye lodge it's on the right

I looked at this one. It looks like the bees knees but when I really thought about it, all the 'bells and whistles' are aimed at the owners rather than the dogs. Contemporary decor and a souvenir photograph of their stay will not enhance my dogs' experience in any way! They do offer lots of extras like beach walks, woodland walks etc but I wasn't happy with their explanation of how these are conducted. You pay an extra £12 - £16 for these extras, yet they were vague about how many dogs would be walked or if they would be let off lead. I kind of get the feeling that they were trying to work out what the answer I wanted to hear was rather than just telling me how they conduct these things! Just didn't get a good feeling about the place at all!

We eventually settled on the Dogs' House at Ballyblack and my dogs are going in today for their first trial run (although they have already been to meet the owner) so that'll be the test but, so far, we have been really impressed with the place...the owner is lovely, seems genuinely interested in making sure the dogs have as comfortable and pleasant a stay as possible and it's not a big establishment so the dogs get as much one-to-one attention as time will allow. Also, for any raw (BARF) feeders looking into kennels, the owner here feeds her own dogs on this diet and is happy to do so to any dogs in her care (we will just bag up the food into daily portions and she'll store them in her freezer) and she'll give them a marrow bone to keep them occupied in their kennel if you wish. My Rottie X will be in 7th heaven...big bone to himself and his sister in a completely separate kennel where she can't nick it off him :D
  • omg do NOT leave your dog in here, i left my springer in for a few days while we were away getting married and when I came back, she had a severe stomach infection, infestation of ear mites and went from being a placid puppy to being aggressive and vicious, due to her "being socialised with the owners dogs"
They lie about underfloor heating, which, apparently according to someone who installs it, needs to be on constantly for it to heat effectively. The floor was stone cold when we visited, which indicates, that if it was even there, it definately hadnt been switched on in a few days. This was in mid winter.
THe morning after we got married, we arrived at 11.35am, we were told the deadline for picking up the dog was 11.30am. The owner was rude, aggressive and downright nasty about it and they charged us a full day extra as punishment for being 5 mins late from our own wedding.
The owners attitude on the day of pick up confirmed my suspicions that the nice-ness shown on the drop off day was so false and OTT
I wouldnt trust this couple with any of my animals again.
My neighbour left his dog in here with his own specialist food, when he came home he could see the dogs ribs, it was starving.
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET IN HERE IF YOU LOVE IT!

Crazykittylady, could you please clarify which establishment you are referring to as it's not clear from your post.

    Thanks
  • I think they are referring to Dogwood Pet Resort. as they mention underfloor heating but I could be wrong..
  • I would recommend Little Pawz in the Craigantlet hills. I left my two wee dogs in there for two weeks last summer and the staff we lovely, the place was clean and i honestly feel my dogs had a good time!

They only take small dogs though.

They also have a cattery - Happy Catz, though I'm not too sure on the details as I have not used this facility, but i'm sure its good as it is run by the same people.

message to crazykittylady, I think you must be very mistaken I and many of my friends have used dogwoodpetresort many times our pets are given sooo much care and attention at least they walk the dogs and give them attention unlike the majority of so called kennels that say they do and dont. I think you owe them an apology you are trying to give them a bad reputation that they do not deserve I find the staff so caring and helpful they really make a difference.
  • I think you should try it I think this is a fabulous place my dog goes to daycare twice a week and loves it!!!!, they have a book with pet owners comments that will reasure you that it really is the best out there. they give their guests so much care and attention I know loads of people that think the same as me. dont knock it until you try it!

My other half runs Lucy's Pet Pals.

    "lucyspetpals.co.uk"

She is kept very busy with cat visits while their owner is away. I think cats prefer their own environment. It's a very good alternative to a cattery.

We can also look after one (small) dog at a time.
