Thats how places liek dominos get away with putting so much salt in there pizzas because they put lots of sugar in to counter it - maybe worth a try?
You'd think they'd save themselves the trouble and expense of putting sugar in by not putting too much salt in in the first place wouldn't you ?

I thought the potato thing worked too, I'd give it a go.
  • Hi all - can you help?!?

I've recently been told my blood pressure is too high (high enough to be extremely rare for someone aged 29) and been told to adapt my lifestyle to see if it will come down. I'm doing the usual things like getting exercise and I've already started a healthy eating regime and given up on the booze and ciggies.

I really love cooking, the problem is that I'm running out of low salt recipes, or ideas even, for evening meals. Anyway does anyone have any ideas they can share?

    Hi Atomicspaceship

I am 25, and have high BP too (always had it - test me rigorously every year or two to try and find a reason, but there isn't one - just essential hypertension apparently). I cook mainly with sesame and ginger based oils, eat a lot of garlic, try and eat 2 apples a day and don't do processed food (am wary of tins of soup etc) - recipe wise, I don't cook with salt at all x

We stopped adding salt to home cooking last year and now don't notice the lack of it any more. Just do normal food without salt or use Lo-salt to start with and move to no salt.

Lemon juice is a good addition to vegetables and so on. I've just had my favourite pea and mint soup with lemon juice and black pepper on it, simply delicious!!

The only thing I HAVE to add salt to now is chip shop chips... so don't have them anymore!!

    Hi atomicspaceship,

There's an earlier thread with ideas on how to cut down on salt so I've added your thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.

    These threads may help too:

    Sling the salt

    Low Salt Diet

    Using salt in cooking

Yes the processed food has been a bit of a revelation. A tin of what was my favourite carrot and coriander soup has sooooooo much salt in it. Pretty much most of the stuff is a no go, but i'm not being lazy one or two days a week and cooking a chicken 'ding'/getting a takeaway/going out for a meal. I've always enjoyed cooking from scratch so I guess I'll get to indulge a bit more in that!

It was a bit scary to be told my blood pressure, but I think it has been the kick up my posterior that I needed to sort out my lifestyle!

I worry about the salt in some of my recipes. It's not much, never added indiscriminately and the user always has the option to leave it out.

However, I've forgotten it on occasion and the dish still worked and tasted fine, I'm tempted to do a sweep through them and omit all references to it. OTOH, you do need some.

I used to have high BP and used LoSalt. In fact, it was recommended, as my medication (Bendroflumethiazide) can cause potassium deficiency.

I still have a big tub of LoSalt for cooking and got rid of the salt shaker.

Eating a stick or two of celery each day is supposed to help lower BP

I think I'd prefer high BP.
