Just bumping this thread in case anyone needs it again. I was making a sort of tomato sauce with meatballs and chickpeas for dh the other day and it was much too salty. I remembered Jamie Oliver on tv one day saying that the manufacturers put loads of salt in pizza toppings to make them tasty, then add sugar to counteract the salt.
I added about 1/2 tsp sugar and a few good squeezes of lemon juice. tasted it and did it again til it tasted just right. It was perfect! Apart from the fact that dh was out later in the day and was telling me that he couldn't understand why he was so thirsty!!! OOps! So, an emergency solution, but not the right way to cook obviously!:o

Was in Makro and they had some smoked ham 5.5Kg reduced and then a 3rd off so I managed to get 2 for £8 each - Bargain me thinks - can feed us all for a week from mone (one now in my freezer) .

Roasted it yesterday and served - was salty but the gravy hid it well !!! For tea today we have had it cold and sliced and its almost uneatable its sooooooo salty. Can I salvage it ? Cursing that I didn't soak it first but the last one I got from there was fine.

Anything I do has to be Gluten Free (coeliac son)

    Anyone ????

  • How about making pea and ham soup with it - just dont add seasoning!

Or keep having it as a roast with gravy?

What were you thinking of doing with the leftovers?

can't you just soak it for a few hours changing the water?

My plan for the week was - with a cream sauce/mushrooms/onions tomorrow and some gluten free pasta. Then chopped on top of GF pizza, then any leftovers a soupy/stewy thing.

Can I soak it now I have cooked it ?

I've probably got about 3kg left - even the dog wont eat it !!!

  • I made marmite mince last night which is normally lovely but instead of just using a stock cube, i used the dark beef stock pot and it's made the mince super salty!

What can i add to the mince to make it less salty but still keep the taste?

    Thanks

Stick a peeled potato in there and simmer until its cooked, then discard it. If its REALLY salty put a couple in, I usually cut them in half. Has helped me in the past :)
  • it's already cooked - made it last night for tonights dinner! I'll try that though - thanks!
  • You could also add some water and a couple of handsful of lentils in, it will bulk it out and take some of the saltiness away, although that's probably better for when its not fully cooked yet.
