How far is your commute to work?

2.6 miles about 10 -15 mins on bike depending on traffic and the wind.....or about 20 mins on a bus
as you say, if it's good for your career and potentially you'd move closer anyway then the extra commute may be worth it long term, if it's not going to help your career much then you could say that for £3k you're committing to an extra 2 hrs work(commute) per day, so say 400+ hours per year extra or about £7.50 or less per hour, whereas your current job pays around £11.50 per hour worked(ignoring the commute). Like all things you've got to weigh up what you feekl your time is worth to you (and also what impact either job will have on your career over time)
you missed the company car tax on your maths Woby.
I travel about 50mile round trip a day and it costs me a full tank of petrol a week - £180 a month. I'm not earning enough at this place to cover that so i'm job hunting.
on top of the money there's the extra hours taken out of your day. I set off around 7:30 to get her for 8:30 and leave at 5 to get home for 6.
do the sums... after tax, national insurance, petrol and the additional travelling time (57.5 hours a week) i'm working for about £4.70 in my pocket an hour0 -
To the OP, i've turned down job offers that would have paid me an extra 3-5k on the basis that it would a) involve me buying a car to do the commute b) make me drive for 45mins round the London north circular
We have 1 car at the moment which my OH uses to drive to work 3 miles away. I figure that extra cost of me buying a car, insuring and running it for a 45-60min journey both ways would not justify the payrise.0 -

It really depends on accidents and school holidays.
I randomly go from London to Slough and in the middle of the day it takes the time the AA website quotes for me. In the evening it can take 2 hours. (I mostly work from home so regular commute is 4 paces.)
I use to go farther than that. In the morning if I left just before 7am it could take 50 minutes in the evening I would have to leave by 4.55pm or after 6pm for it to take 1 hour 10 minutes if there were no accidents on any of the motorways or A roads. If I left between 5-6 I got home 5 minutes earlier than if I left at 6pm. However one spring half term I left the office at 4.55pm and it took me took me 3.5 hours to get home. Other school holiday times where just as bad on the way home.. My journey was only 35 miles each way.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

I have before had commutes of...
-1 hour (45 miles) each way by car
-4 miles (about 15 mins on a bike, 30 in car!)
-12 miles (30 mins each way)
and its currently - 1hour 20 mins approx! Thats 5 mins walk, then 1hr10 on the train, then 5 mins walk! Each way that is.
I went from the last job (which was v boring) and thought that the 10% payrise would help out. It does a bit, but you have very little time in the evenings! Depends how that goes for you really. I would prefer to have a lesser commute, but for career plans for me i think it is worth it to commute for a few years. Also just bought a house about the week before starting the new job(its complicated) so do not want to sell up and move just yet!0 -
Dont forget the tax on the £3,000 pa payrise - so does £40 odd per week sound worth it? - particularly as you'll probably end up spending extra money to make up for shortage of time (from the extra time spent commuting) - more ready meals/less time for shopping around/etc/etc. What about your evenings - how much "evening" will you actually have by the time you have got home/got dinner/eaten it/washed up. I just know that I could "kiss goodbye" to everything I had decided to do of a weekday evening if I spent that long getting to and from work each day - as, in my life, all evening activities I decide to go to start between 6pm-7.30pm. Some things are worth more than money.
....and all that is only taking into account your own personal considerations.....but then theres the fact no-one has mentioned so far....a lot more car usage than at present (thinking of the environmental considerations here).0 -
i have always worked within a mile to where i live , i suppose i could have done better jobs wise as i work in a factory but for the area i live in,a small town, i am quite well paid
i would avoid commuting any distance longer as long as i can and would take a hit financially if i had to. i am in the house 5 mins after finishing work you cant beat it0 -
about five minutes in the car. drop dd to school at 8.50am. get to work at 8.55. start work 9.00am. finish work 3pm. collect dd at 3.05pm. perfect.
not bad pay either for a mum £8.40 ph.0 -
5-10 minute drive, traffic permitting, to the car park literally on the office doorstep.
On days when I don't have to come home at lunchtime to let the dog out , I can walk it in 30-40 minutes depending on how energetic I feel.
Probably 25 minutes door to door if I walked to the bus stop and bussed in.
Such a huge difference to when I lived north of Milton Keynes and commuted to very near Buckingham Palace every day. That was two and a half hours each way - drive/train/tube/walk. It was grim, and I look back on this days with horror. How the devil I stuck it (right up until eight and a half months pregnant!) I'll NEVER know!
Good luck with your decision.0 -
oh yes i forgot to say i commute home at lunch time to walk the dog and eat lunch and usually hang up some washing or do the dishes. and i only get 45 mins!!!!0
