I walk one mile each way (about 20 mins). For this though I have a job which pays quite badly. I understand that the convienience is brilliant - I can pick up the kids from school or go to the shops and go to work all within a one mile round trip. But I would be willing to get on the bus for more money as right now i feel my career is going nowhere and I am badly underpaid!
  • Wow I was actually going to post a question similar to this this morning...

Basically I am due to start a new job soon (or at least hope I am - no paperwork or word since mid last week, starting to panic a little) and it would involve a commute.

Basically its from Milton Keynes area to Slough area, hours of work would be 9-5, I was wondering how long this would take each day, particularly getting there?

(sorry for being slightly off topic, please move if necessary.)

About 6 miles each way. I live on the eastern edge of the city, I work near the western road out of the city. Takes me about 20 minutes on my scooter. Only problem for me is the local caravan industry and the port - at the time I go to work (8:30) the lorries are just leaving the ferries and holiday homes which overhang the lanes are being transported, making it difficult to skip the traffic.

Even though this is the longest commute I have ever had, I don't mind it because I like my job. That might change when they move 20 miles out of town, but for the moment 20 minutes a day is fairly reasonable compared to other times I have seen here (mostly in bigger cities).

22 miles each way - thankfully by car. I have looked at getting a job nearer but it would still take 45 minutes to do 3 miles on a bus with a load of shoolkids. I know what I find more relaxing! You could do a trial commute and see how long it takes you during rush hour and whether it's going to be a pain or fairly easy.

He bangs the drum-put the journey onto https://www.theaa.com -they have a really good route planner with journey time and mileage which should give you an idea.
To the OP okay with the extra info I'd say go for it-especially if there is the possibility of been mobile enough for you both to be able to move. If it has good prospects -which it sounds like it does-then go for it. You can always watch "catch up Saturday" for Hollyoaks ;)

  • thanks for the reply duchy, but I was after a rush hour journey time. AA says 1hr10, I've done the journey a couple of times during the day and its been around that each time. I'm just worried that for a 9am start I'm gonna have to leave at 6 or something

I did a weekly commute of 100 miles each way for a year, then a weekly commute of 200 miles each way for 6 months.

I do a weekly commute (driving) of 170 miles each way (travelling every Thursday and Sunday nights, usually very late). Feb 3rd will be my 5th anniversary of doing that

While in London the 4 mile commute takes between 30 and 50 minutes usually (small walk, train then bus).

On a Friday I work from an office 16 miles from my house. The drive rarely takes me more than 20 minutes door to door.

RAC website gives you 3 times: if you're lucky with traffic, average, and if the traffic's bad. Also they don't expect you to drive at 60 mph all the way (which one of them does! Multimap I think!) but anticipate average of 30 mph on non-national roads and I think only 50 mph on national roads.

At your age, some of us can and some of us can't cope with commuting. I've never driven any distance to work, used to get the train from Guildford to London but could not do it now! DH coped with a weekly commute from Guildford to Bristol, and then daily Bristol to Gloucester, and that did not suit him.

We now have a 20 minute drive as long as we miss the rush hour. As we work different hours, I usually get the bus (1 hour including walking) or train (45 minutes including walking) home and leave him the car, because the buses are pants by the time he comes home! that's quite long enough for me!
