How far is your commute to work?

Hi guys and gals,

Just wondering how far everyone commutes to work?

Currently applying for a job that would involve a lot longer commute than I currently do and not sure if it will end up being too much for me....

Currently get paid £21k and do 18 miles to work = 30 minutes

New job would be £24k (plus company car and most of time would be out of office somewhere in between my house and the office, plus "potential for some home working") but would be more like 50 miles = 1hour 30mins.

Now I really like the sound of the job and think it would be great for my career (i'm 27 nearly and want to progress as quickly as possible while I am (ahem) young....

So come on everyone, how long is your commute?

Any words of comfort?

  • It depends on what kind of commute it is...1 hr 30 mins on the tube in rush hour london would be enough to make any man cry! but through the countryside in a porsche would be lovely.

I currently commute 13 miles in the car, takes me about 25 mins. Before I moved house I would get the train for 40 mins - 1 hr, which was a nightmare, train always delayed or full.

    Do you have kids?

I'm currently commuting 65 miles each way by car. Normally takes about 1hr 45min.

  • Currently 10 min walk to bus, 10-15 min bus ride to train station (occasionally get a lift), 15 - 20 mins on the train, swap to underground for about 20 minute, walk to the office from there.

On a good day, i can go door to door in about an hour, with a lift I can do it in 45 minutes. It's broken up so i don't mind, plus i always watch TV/videos on my ipod.

On a bad day, it could take me 1hr 30.. if the network system dies, it could take me hours and cost a fortune (only happened once so far)

I think at your stage in your career some things have to be looked at as investments. If you are getting the option of home working, and also will be out on appointments some days, then you won't have that commute every day.

It sounds as if your instinct is telling you the job is for you, so I would go for it.

I currently commute 26 miles, which because of major roadworks currently takes around a horrendous hour and 20 minutes. I have commuted longer distances. Sometimes I find that leaving earlier and coming home later means you avoid the worst of the traffic - although getting into that as a habit isn't so good for work/life balance.

the other consideration will be the expense. Depends on your company's expense policy but you may not be able to claim petrol for journeys which are less than your home to work distance.

But go with your instinct! Good luck with the application

Takes me 45 mins to an hour to do a 15 mile drive to work, about 30-40 mins on the way home.

I don't mind the actual drive but it's the cost of petrol that gets to me. It's a minimum of £80 a month just to get to work and back.

If you can afford the petrol (I'm not sure how the company car thing would work as regards petrol etc) and don't mind the drive then go for it. I quite like my hour in the mornings listening to the radio.

About 27 miles each way, taking 1 hour, but its a bit convoluted - as I live in the middle of nowhere.

Drive to the local train station (4 miles) - buses aren't an option as they don't start early enough, theres only 1 an hour and they often don't show!

Train to Leeds - 40 mins.

Walk to work from station - 12 mins.

  • 7 miles each way for me which takes about 15 mins and then about 15 miles doing all my calls :D

I've got about 8-9 miles each way, takes between 10 and 25 minutes depending on when I leave (and how fast I drive :) )

Would really like a shorter trip, though, ideally a walk.

It depends of what's important to you though - would you rather have a little more money, but two hours less per day to spend it in?

What value do you put on not having to sit in traffic getting taxed through the nose?

If you think the job could lead onto greater things, it's worth taking that into account.

My current commute is as long as it takes to walk into my home office. I've done the long commutes in the past and found that to me it isn't worth the extra money v the extra time spent travelling-but if I was building my career and didn't have children I'd be using an entirely different criteria so really it's down to what you want in your work/life balance that counts not what anyone else thinks.
