    I've been Money Tipped!
We've just had huge problems swapping from AOL dial up to broadband...it's like they don't want the extra dosh each month.

We've been really impressed with AOL for the last 5 years, but these last few weeks has completely changed our opinion.

I have been with AOL for 6 years now and I am more than happy with them. I changed from dial-up to Broadband last August and it went swimmingly. Maybe you just had a bad run of luck if you had problems bylromarha ?

I agree it's not nice that they are now charging for customer support but I have to admit I have maybe phoned them 3 or 4 times since I joined? Once was when I was installing wireless router card for broadband in my laptop. They spent almost an hour setting up my desktop and my laptop to take Broadband and the service was marvellous. Thing to consider is this:

Most IPS's charge for telephone support (AOL was one of the few who didn't) when you take into account all the extra's you get with AOL I think the other Broadband providers don't represent that good a value for money. They charge fro phone calls to customer support too! I wouldn't dream of changing from AOL...where else can I get the 'Gold' package I have which gives me Broadband on my Desktop/Laptop at home and also dial-up free of charge on my laptop from any UK telephone number?

Yes, I have the business package, Broadband Gold Plus which gives me Broadband at home and dial-up free on my laptop from any UK phone number. The package cost me £31.99 a month and I wouldn't be without it.

  • A friend of mine has decided to leave AOL and asked them for a MAC key. They told her it took 24 hours and that she would receive it by email. She didnt but instead was told that she couldnt get a mac key because her broadband A/C was cancelled!
After waiting for 30 mins on the line she was again refused and that she should wait another 48 hours.. Presumably to be fobbed off yet again... She has also been charged for aol " GOLD" service but only gets 512k service ( 488k max actually ) Does anyone know if its a legal requirement to provide a mac key?

Unfortunately not.. it's entirely up to the ISP whether they do or not and some make it as difficult as possible. To be fair Wanadoo are just as bad and Tiscali have been warned about it...

Funny you should say that, i'm having the same problem myself. I had the modem installed in December through NTL . I am still waiting for a welcome pack disc for me to access Broadband.

If and when i am able to access Broad through aol I will be on BB Gold for £19.99 a month, which is a increase, but i agree its like they don't want extra money.

I have wrote a letter of complaint asking for some compensation for the amount of calls i have made, to their 0870 number. I will report if i am successful in my bid.

Why join AOL in the first place? computers have Internet explorer so there is no need for AOL's strange system also if you want to receive emails dont go AOL , I have had more problems contacting ppl on AOL than any other ISP.
I know NTL has a bad name but I have been on a discount for nearly 2 years now so it cant be bad.

From knowing someone with an AOL connection that I often have to go round and fix. I can tell you NTL is defentally miles better even though they do have there fair share of problems.
