The Mystery of the Forum Answerers

I've noticed that some people leave competition answers on the forums, which I'm a bit puzzled by;

Are they SO altrustic that they think if they leave an answer they will help as many people enter as possible in turn reducing their own chances greatly, how very charitable:rotfl: If they knew what the 6 correct numbers were for the Lottery would they go round the streets with a megaphone shouting them out, so that so many people enter their guaranteed 6 million pound on draw night is whittled down to £63.24 because they told so many people.

    OR

Are they leaving dodgy answers so lazybones will take their answer to be correct and enter with the wrong answer so the cunning 'answer giver' INCREASES their own chance of winning because so many people fell for the bait, so even if they are drawn the winner because of the dud answer they dont win.......

    OR

have I been reading to much Agatha Christie?

I leave the answers to be nice - the answers are often so obvious a trained chimp could answer them correctly so it just speeds up the process for everyone. Nowt to worry over! Dont be so suspicious :D

    Dear Sherlock

I think it's more about the sharing of answers to maximise entries to comps people want to enter :)

    Dear Swimmer

I have often pondered myself the fact the someone may put the incorrect answer on purpose to ward of all competition:eek: and have concluded the following

    1. The incorrect answer would not go unchallenged for long - not on MSE anyway.

    2. The people on this web-site are much too nice to do that :D

Carry on comping :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

We help each other out here - someone will know the answer if you don't. A lot of people enjoy others winning from 'their' comps.

It is advisable however to check the answers though - in case someone who thinks along the same lines as you has posted. ;)

Im really surprised with this, this is how this forum works we share, id never dream of giving a deliberate wrong answer, Most comp sites dont give answers unless you go into their forums were some might be discussed, some have locked forums so only their choosen members can see, thats why i comp here as its nice to help each other, this was mentioned on the laptop post, about how dare we disuss and seek the answers?!?!!? its a comps foru thats what you do!!! x
To sum up my ramblings, if people moan about the answers why dont they find the comps themselves and do it that way, then they seek their own answers, but no ,people come here want the comp found but not the answer, its the same difference .

To be honest, in the majority of cases it's just a time saver -- most comps really tend to either have really obvious questions ("What colour is the sky?" A) Green, B) Blue, C) Pink with purple polka dots :rotfl: ) or ones which have the answer either in the blurb above or somewhere on the website. In the first case, having the answer saves the bother of a) reading the question and b) rolling your eyes  ;), and in the second, it really can be a real time-saver which is useful for people who only have limited comping time due to family, work or other commitments.

So I really think those cases would only be comparable to telling people the lottery numbers if the numbers were stuck up on the newsagent's wall and you were just saving people the bother of walking over and reading them! It's not really the same thing at all, in my opinion.

And the other type of comps is when you have to do a bit of work to find the answers, like picture or word quizzes which you often find in newspapers, and in this case it's rare that the OP posts all the answers -- normally lots of different MSErs chip in and do their bit to answer the questions they can, and it's really more of a team effort. I agree with toniq, it creates a really nice, sharing atmosphere!

As for deliberately posting the wrong answers, well, I've never seen an MSEr malicious enough to do that, and even if they did, I expect within about thirty seconds there'd be about twenty messages from various other compers politely informing them of their mistake! :p

Anyway, that's my (slightly long) 2 cents!

Edit: Oh, and to be honest, there's very little point deliberately not posting the answer to a comp (unless the company running it have specifically asked you not to, which does happen) because someone else will always come along to post it anyway!

Win £2008 in 2008 number 60, only £3.75 to go! (it is highly likely I'll win absolutely nothing else now this year! ;))

I don't remember anybody ever maliciously posting wrong answers (in last 6 months that I've been visiting this site anyway).

I think everybody who posts the answers are very kind - they don't have to post the competitions let alone the answers - so I for one believe that all answers posted are done with good intentions.

The only upsetting thing I have found was to do with the recent Jet2.com competition - I didn't post the competition but I did spend ages searching out the answers and posted - I wasn't lucky enough to win a flight as couldn't access internet from work but what made it even worse was that my answers were copied and pasted from this site (there were a couple of typing errors) and displayed on several other sites.

However, it wouldn't stop me posting answers in the future (if I am clever and quick enough! LOL)

A Stitch in Time Losses Nine

So, people spend all their time entering a host of contests to increase their chances of winning something. Then they do the work, find the answer to make it quicker and easier for everyone to enter and in one quick stroke reduce their own chances of winning......:rotfl:

Perhaps the reason TV stations set stupid questions is because they now if they expected anyone to use their brain for five seconds, you know like pick up an atlas or do some internet research they would only make about £2.50 rather than the millions they make when they ask "What was the colour of Red Riding Hoods Coat?

    A. Chrome
    B. Red
    c. Racing Green

I worked at a local magazine once upon a time and the number of people who obviously in a total rush (I think relying on forum answers rather than finding out for yourself, falls under this category)didnt give the answer or got it wrong or even missed out essentials like their contact details:j :T dear oh dear.

And if I was in with a chance of winning my own olympic sized pool with villa to match would I be posting the answer to 'help others' not blinkin likely.

However, before you all call me a selfish hog, i would dive in to save you if you were drowning.;)
