I'm very sceptical of Use By dates. I've just opened a tub of Greek Yoghurt I found in the chiller tray of my fridge with a Use By date of 22 August 08. It was still in perfect condition and I had some for breakfast with fruit, so when I come back on here and post tomorrow and the day afterwards, perhaps it will convince anybody who throws stuff out if it's past its Use By date that they are to be taken with a huge pinch of salt.0

There is a supermarket near us that was about a year ago caught changing use by dates on it's stuff by a couple of days - even prepacked meat. A well known name as well....... another well known name nearby was also done repeatedly for having stuff on it's shelves past the use by date - and I mean by about a week and it was "fresh produce"...... it was a standing joke locally that if you went shopping in there you took a calendar with you and checked everything....But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Now, I'm not proud of this....:embarasse
I came back from a few drinks at a neighbours on Christmas Eve, thinking about a nightcap, to round off the evening. Out comes the Bailey's. Just a wee snifter and then off to bed...
The next morning, as I put the bottle away, I looked at the Best Before Date. It was...ahem...August 2000.
Have I thrown it away? Dear Reader, I will let you draw your own conclusion.;)Won Mulberry Bag Jan 090 -
Now then, can I interest anyone in a nice glass of Bailey's with ice?!.......Won Mulberry Bag Jan 090

If you buy tomatoes on the vine they will last for ages, I had some in my fridge for a month probably and they were good as new. I have eaten some pretty dodge stuff in my time, but my dad is the funniest. He kept out of date soda to use as cleaning fluid. Now that's thrifty!
As for cereals or porridge that is a bit on the suspect side, I will put it out on the lawn for the birds / animals. Otherwise, most things (fish, cheese, milk, meat) go through the 'if the cat eats it I will' test. Basically, if my cat sniffs it without running a mile, with his excellent sense of smell, I should think it would be fine lol (but don't feed it to your cat if it's gone off!)0 -

Lol I have some Tesco own brand take on Baileys in my fridge from before Christmas... we'll see what happens to that. I've also got some rocket salad that might go off like a rocket at some point because it's so old. One day I will check what date the petit filous at the back of the fridge went off... until then I will live with the delusion that I might eat them.0
