My washing machine is broken and has been fixed by fiddling with a screwdriver and some duct tape. Its been like that since before Xmas. I change the duct tape occasionally as it loses its stick.

  • My OH lives by one rule:

If it should move, but doesn't, use WD40.
If it does move, but shouldn't, use duct tape.

Failing that its destined for the bin !!

My electric steamer died the other week.
I'm really reluctant to throw the two plastic steamer bowls away..they must be useful for something!!...but what?????

    Ideas please!
I used my plastic steamer bowls over pans. It saved me from buyer a new steamer for a while but I managed to get distracted for a while one day and melted one of them when the pan went dry.

Still have the other one. But no pan to put it over ...

Is there anybody else like me who seems to be constitutionally incapable of throwing out broken/damaged items and is still limping along with them trying to squeeze out a little more use?

Anybody care to add to my list?
    - a badly split plastic colander which is still being used to drain vegetables
    - a large cracked hand mirror used to blow dry my hair
    - a pair of split garden Cloggies mended with Duct tape which have split
open again but still being used
    - several pairs of holey knickers which wouldn't bear inspection if I was
    run over by a bus.

Am I tight or just frugal? If the economy were better I might feel more comfortable about replacing things but while items still have some use left in them I feel badly about committing them to the landfill site.

Get rid of them! Broken things carry bad karma.

Give the colander to someone to plant their water lilies in.
Throw the mirror away, the glass might fall out of he frame and cut your foot one of these days!
Use the holey knickers as dusters.
Can't think what to say about the cloggies! Have you got another pair of old shoes lurking around that can become your gardening shoes instead? I bet you have!

Feel comfortable that you are helping the economy by replacing these things!

I`m sure the veg won`t mind the split colander, who cares if you`re in the garden and as for your knickers try not to get run over as that could be embarrassing:eek:

If I took you out for a date maybe you could buy a new pair:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I would see if you can buy the same model steamer again then you could maybe use the 2 bowls as extras so instead of 2 tier you'd have a 4 tier?

  • I don't see anything wrong in holding onto things and making them last longer so long as they are not going to damage your health etc.

I'm always looking to do just that, I went mad with a roll of gaffer tape I found in the garage once and now have mended the rug in the kitchen, my wash basket and a few other things that were going to be thrown out.

Yesterday I found 2 manky apples in the fruit bowl, peeled them, chopped off the manky bits and chopped them up. Made a bread and butter pud with the dry bread from the week and mixed the chopped apple into it along with some raisins. DD doesn't like bread pud much but I called it apple betty and she had 2 helpings! :)

This sends shivers down my spine. My Dad worked for over fourty years in the washing machine industry and just before he retired one of the engineers his company employed was killed by an electric shock after the owner of the machine (the engineers father no less!) had fiddled and covered up wires with duct tape - it wasn't done properly and the engineering touched it and was killed.

now i know i shuldnt say this, but i once worked for a large meat company who imported their meat with a use by date on, it came to us, we either took their labels off and put ours on with longer dates.... or we used the meat to make meat products and labeled them with our own dates, which confused me as the meat we used has a different use by but the final product had another one...i know i know.... but it does prove stuff lasts longer than they say. i think it was legal as it was imported..... i hope.... lol....
