Try uninstalling ie7 from add/remove programs in control panel once uninstalled restart pc then reinstall ie7.

    Or to remove ie7 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177

    Get a fresh copy of ie7 http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/default.mspx

    also uninstall Java http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010800.xml

then get a shiny new copy of java http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp choose correct platform i.e XP

Good Afternoon! Right, a small update and it may or may not be useful! I have been to my OU site to collect an essay and it tells me that JavaScript needs to be enabled and it wont let me do what I need to. But, when I goggle about enabling Java I have gone into my IE7 settings and checked that the boxes were ticked and they were. I have also been to the Java webite and verified the Java on my system and it says congrats - I have Version 6 Update 3. I now also have managed to download Flash Pluggin from somewhere else (cannot remember, but it was a mirror???) but still nothing has changed on either my IE7 or AOL browsers and I cannot do/see lots of stuff I was able to. I still cannot click the thanks button here cos its physically not there!!!! Any more ideas??????
  • Try this in IE, Tools-Manage Add Ons-Enable or Disbale Add Ons-Drop the list down to show-Add Ons that run without requiring permission, then find the Java add-ons and make sure all are enabled then click OK then exite IE then re-open IE, if this doesnt work try disabling them then restart IE as before then re-enable them.

Hello there!Right. Tried everything and gave the laptop to someone who claims he knows what he is doing (he works in computer field so technically....) but he has no idea what I have done (as I cannot insert smilies here, imagine a deeply emabarssed one..)Anyway, he has suggested that I re-install XP. And off he flounced. So, What do I do? How simple is this? I currently have home ed. with SP2 and he has given me a new re-installation disc of XP professional pro. But, it says on the packet that the COA that contains the product key will be on the bottom of my new computer (but the only key code on my PC relates to Home version and this computer). There is a label on the packet that has a 20 digit code, but not laid out the same as the product key on my computer (4 by 4 by 4) Will I need a product key anyway? How do I actually install this? Do I need to delete anthing on my laptop first? Or is it as simple as just inserting the disc now and it will update everything?? Friend is not contactable now (Friday nights mean alcohol and loose women, so he is "busy"!)
  • This is why i say USE FIREFOX - IE is a piece of crap.

As for a clean install - its prob the best way but based on the questions you have asked - i would let the techy guy do this.

The best way of course would be to find the XP Home Disk that came with your laptop.

There is no point in installing XP Pro if you have no valid license key for it. And if he has one, its probably dodgy, which means you will have problems with Windows Updates.

The easy way is to find out what type of product key you have - as in what type of Windows Home disk you need (not all are the same - there are different media for different license keys)

Once you establish that, get your techy to find that type of media (not hard if he is a techy) and get him to rebuild your lappy.

Personally, i would refer this note to him and he should know what to do.

And AGAIN - USE FIREFOX next time. Sometimes you may need to use IE for certain sites - but do so when its absolutely imperative.

IMPORTANT: Back up all the files and folders you need onto a USB Pen/External Hard Drive/DVD or whatever before you do the install.

If you need to pay him for this - clean install with no programs and all updates, restore all documents and files £60 - with programs and everything you need (without taking the pizz) £75 tops.

Thats what i would do it for.

I would probably suggest that you let me take an image of the machine when everything is restored and the applications are installed (£10 more). This means that i can make a recovery disk in its current state. This disk(s) mean that if your laptop dies again, instead of installing the Windows and Applications from scratch, you can just reinstall this image - faster, better, time saving operation. Its like a recovery CD but better as its your own custom image of the way you want it as opposed to the factory default settings, which install all sorts of crap without any additional programs.

£85.00 and you will be right as rain with me. If you were a friend id lower the price a little.

This whole operation can take between 2-4 hours.

p.s. Make Sure you come back, thank me, send me some kisses and drop me your number in PM (haha joke)
