Always make my own. Found a little recipe on a sainsbury's card that I generally use. I also miss out any nuts, but I do add cranberries and blueberries. Sainsburys have little bags of them and I simply add them to the mix.
A couple of years ago I stopped adding alcohol to the cake as one of the step-daughters had an 'aversion' to alcohol (don't ask). However, I still wanted the cake to have time to mature and wanted to add something. So instead I get a bottle of cranberry juice and add that instead.
Everyone who has a peice of my cake seems to like it and I intend to continue doing it...even though step-daughter no longer has the aversion to alcohol. Of course it doesn't have the alcoholic taste of a normal Christmas cake, but its different to what other members of the family have so they find that its a nice change.
I also don't see any point in buying a bottle just to add to a cake when people are happy with far cheaper cranberry juice instead.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

Managed to get a few more pressies yipee!
Boots had these hat boxes called Ms Makeup (Ithink!) and they were priced at £15 but in clearance section so got them priced up and they were £1.87 each! Also got a few bits in Debenhams as they are having 70% off clearance sale.
I love being organised, last year I had an op on Dec 1st so had to get all my pressies sorted before then, so I plan to do the same this year!
Also, I turn 40 this year and this will be my first ever Christmas in my own home and I have never cooked a Christmas dinner before so I am looking forward to all the cooking tips on here!!
Thanks everyone ho ho ho!0 -

For anyone who likes an alternative Xmas dinner! :T
I don't like turkey (find it a bit boring) so always do something different - a couple of years ago I did:
Steak Marinated in Teriyaki sauce and Whisky
This is truly amaaaaaaazing and you won't believe me until you try it! :j
RECIPE:
All you need is:- 4 steaks (really nice ones - we got ours from meat counter @ Sainsburys)
- I bottle Teriyaki Marinade (in most supermarkets in Japanese/Chinese section)
- 10 Rounds of sliced oranges
- Half bottle Whisky (can be cheap whisky)
Marinade the steaks in half a bottle of Teriyaki marinade , then top up with whisky until the steaks are covered. Add orange rounds (and maybe a little fresh orange juice) and seasoning as required.
Leave for 6-8 hours. This will soften the meat wonderfully and allow all the flavours to develop and be absorbed fully.
Grill to perfection and serve with:
- honey roast parsnips
- roast potatoes (the way Delia does 'em)
- brussel sprouts with chestnut (I added a buttery orangey sauce over the brussel sprouts)
BEST MEAL EVER - have never made it again in case I ruined the memories of that perfect 1st time!
Try it - you won't be dissapointed :beer:MFW #185
