Just a point to take note of HALIFAX is part of BANK OF SCOTLAND. They are merged and it is now HBOS - Halifax Bank of Scotland, so I see no point in changing to Halifax and their central computer will have all your details anyway from your Bank of Scotland a/c.
Either way, I would advise in your current situation, taking all factors in all your postings into account, stay with your current bank. Pay your debts off, save the money you plan to save, improve your credit rating gradually then in a few years, aply to upgrade your a/c with HBOS.
Good Luck

@ ember
no i didnt mean change to halifax i mean back to my orginal post about LLYODS TSB0 -
The choice is yours hon, I don't actually see any benefit from it financially apart from maybe the pleasure of a shiny new account you can make a fresh start from. If you do decide to open a LLoydsTSB a/c I think you should still keep the Bank Of Scotland a/c's open, as like I said earlier, with all the hassle opening accounts now, best not to dump them unless you really need to. LLoydsTSB branch in Inverness is quite good, never had any complaints with them.~What you send out comes back to thee thricefold!~~0

there is a few things thats making me want to stay which are
1) good internet banking
2) debt card for any cash machine
3) can use card to buy good on net etc0 -
I have decided that am going to keep my normal cashcard account. it has been very up and down over the last 12months BUT i am going to get that back on track from now and show a good record for the next 6 months and see about a upgrade. Also I have setup another savings account with them that i havent started to use yet but I will from now onwards to get a record of savings etc.0

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what's the big obsession about getting an upgrade in six months? Go to a bank (Lloyds TSB or another) who has a basic account WITH a debit card (rather than chq guarantee) There's not a huge amount of difference and to be honest it's very easy to get and overdraft/go over your overdraft with a chq guarantee/debit card so is not the best thing in the world. I'm just wondering why you are so desperate to 'upgrade in 6 months' (must have mentioned it 15 times!)0

no am not desperate. was only saying tho.
am staying with bank of scotland now anyway0 -
Just out of interest.
If you close a account with a bank, how long do they hold your closed account on file for?0 -
My understanding is that it has to be a minimum of 7 years (as per the data protection act). But I could be wrong.0
