When I had an op a few years back I found there was a very good reason the doctors signed me off for 6 weeks - I was totally wiped out for the first 3 weeks, pretty wiped out weeks 4 and 5 and just starting to feel human again week 6. All the best for your recovery.

Like you I commute and work full time, and as I work with young people I find that in the evenings I'm just so wiped out all I can do is eat and go to bed!

At the weekends I find strength to do the basic chores, like kitchen/bathroom/loo hygiene, feeding the birds, washing up and putting most things "sort of" away but things like skirting boards, tops of wardrobes, curtain washing, etc. are rarer events!

If I'm ill, or even just under the weather, which being a woman of a certain age includes being utterly floored by a heavy/painful monthly, not to mention those horrible hormones - I get practically nothing done except basic hygiene.

I've learned not to beat myself up over this and instead of forcing myself to drudge around the house constantly battling it all, I make it a priority to tidy/clean up my home office/hobby area (the dining room, with french windows onto the garden).

I then find time to put aside just for hobbying, reading or gardening, and just forget about all the other jobs waiting to be done. They'll wait - but having no rest and recuperation time will have us pushing up daisies!

Thank you for your reply JPScloud its nice to know sometimes that others are going through the same problems/way of life as I am.

Your comment about curtain washing made me laugh as I don't think I have washed mine in years:o (a touch of febreeze every now and then).

To be honest I know I have a habit of letting work takeover sometimes and not being able to "switch off" is not a good thing.
So I have been relaxing and doing some knitting and attempted crochet whilst I have been off ill.

Now off to do some dinner.

I don't know what is wrong with me - I just have gone off food and cooking! I love cooking and baking (and eating!) normally, and have tons of favourite recipes and lovely cook books. I just sit here and think I can't be bothered.
Everynight for a week now i've either called a take away or got DH to grab something on the way home and left him to cook. My kids are all saying "There's nothing to eat in the house", only 2 managed cereal before we ran out of milk, I gave DS2 money for a take away at lunch because we have no bread or fillings for his school packed lunch - what on earth am I doing?
I'm still doing all the tidying and washing but I just can't face the thought or smell of cooking anything - has this ever happened to anyone before?

    Pregnancy test? lol!

Just kidding - maybe you are just burned out and need a rest, or need to drum up some enthusiasm for food again.

How about making a meal plan with some simple but favourite dishes... Failing that, make a meal rota with everybody able to make something (if the kids are old enough).

I know how you feel. I cba to cook recently and have been eating out or take aways and I can't afford it. Cooked my first proper meal at home last night - cba to do accompanyments but it was a lovely beef bourginon with lots of swede, carrot, sweet potato and onion thrown in so didn't really need the broccoli and roasties I had planned to do with it!

    Hi!

Firstly, I just wanted to say that I think it happens to a lot of us. I'm just coming out of one of those periods. I'm not sure *how* I came out of it to be honest.

Although, things just came to a head, I had a huge hissy tantrum and went and made some scones to get out of the way of the kids throttling each other. Then I made some pizzas, and some egg mayonnaise for dh's sandwiches. All in one evening! That's after a long period of just sitting and waiting for someone else to have the motivation to feed us all (thankfully dh does it when I'm on one!).

The one thing that might be good is to find a fail proof recipe that you fancy doing, the cranberry and orange scones I made were easy and worked really well. I was proud of myself! Then sit and eat them all if you want to :p

After you've done that, it might kickstart you. But do make sure you do something that's not essential and that you have time to enjoy doing if you can, rather than chore type cooking.

Hopefully you'll realise it will come back, as someone else said, burning out is probably the main reason we all lose interest in cooking. Especially if everyone is expecting you to do it without much thanks and you're stuck in a rut.

The takeaway habit isn't great I know for lots of reasons, but don't kick yourself about it. I'm coming to terms with beans on toast being fine for tea for the lot of us. Sometimes I do expect too much of myself and that's when I get to the takeaway stage (I'm fat and we're skint, it's complete self sabotage and really illogical!)

Anyway, I'm sure everyone on here will agree that it's normal!

I hope you feel better about stuffs soon, sending you big hugs xxxx
