    Thanks so much everyone. I'm going to nip round again today and ask again to see if they've found it.

    I don't think for one minute they would have cashed it, but I think I might ask the buyer to either contact the RM, or let me have details of the PO so I can do so.

    And I think I might also have a moan at RM about the postie.

    Crikey - he's happy to take a RD letter next door, but if he has parcels, he NEVER knocks - just leaves them in his car and shoves a note through the door!! DH caught him at it once - noticed the note, opened the door as postie was still there and asked him for the parcel. Hmm. It was a 5-min walk away in his boot!! Naughty boy.
  • Obviously i don't know the daughter... so shouldnt just assume... but it sounds as though she was curious as to what was inside this 'special sign for envelope' and opened it up to see what was inside, and then either chucked it away knowing she couldnt give it back to you once opened, or she had hidden it and is planning to cash it somewhere.

    As you say though, at least it was only less than a fiver.

    My postman never gets neigbours to sign for things! If i'm not home, then straight back to the sorting office it goes!!!
    I :heart::coffee:
  • What would she have done with it if it were cash?? Thing is, no matter how young or curious I was about what was in someone else's post I would never have opened it, and if she was that young that she's not aware that you shouldn't open other people's post, what was she doing being allowed to sign for something in the first place, or at home on her own (possibly)?
    :D**Thanks to everyone on here for hints, tips and advice!**:D

    Why would you send the second PO back to the buyer? It's not your responsibility to re-imburse them for the RM's incompetence, they had a contract with the RM covered by insurance, which the RM failed to fulfil. You should have cashed the second PO and left the buyer to chase their contract with the RM. I find it very difficult to believe that the daughter signed for something and then "forgot" what they did with it, as above, they propbably "forgot" that they cashed it, thinking that a PO is just as good as cash and can't be traced.

    While I agree with your first point, recorded delivery does not cover postal orders, so the buyer cannot claim. (AFAIK)

    Is that because postal orders can be re-claimed if lost anyway, assuming the details are known?

    I don't know whether the PO was crossed - if it wasn't, it would have been as good as cash. Cash, vouchers, etc. aren't covered by RD so I'm sure an uncrossed PO wouldn't have been either. If it was crossed, it might be a different story. (The RM site seems not to make this information easy to find)

  • If it turns out that it has been cashed what will you do about the neighbours?
