  • Let's see from OP 1 what was the amount of the cheque and 2 was she allowed to bank it.

I've had some sent to me in the name 'Kym' when my given name is 'Kimberley' and they've cashed them so I wouldn't worry about it personally

That is not the same thing at all.
Kym or Kim is a shortening for Kimberley.
But if you were Miss not Mrs and the cheque was made out to Mrs Kym then you would potentially not be allowed to bank it.

I really don't see why. Miss or Mrs is a convention to indicate that a female is thought to be single or married. Whether they are single, married, or biologically a male should be of no concern financially to the person drawing the cheque and of no concern therefore to the financial institution.

No account will be taken of the title on the cheque by the receiving bank.

But I'd be very wary of writing a forename on a cheque unless I was very, very sure how it was spelt. Most people will ask for a cheque to be payable to 'J Smith'. But if I made it out to 'John Smith' and it turned out to be 'Jon Smith', the bank might very well refuse it. Initial is much safer.
  • the missus is called Rebecca but known as Becky. She has had cheques to Ms B ***** and has only ever had 1 challenged. Scary but true!

Any with the initial B she now just changes to an R and they always get processed.

Never had any trouble in 30 years but the slack security makes me wonder sometimes!!

It's possibly even scarier that some people assume her parents gave her the name Becky and that it couldn't possibly be an abbreviation for anything
    ;-)
  • Some interesting comments ..... but I thought that all cheques were now "Account Payee" meaning they can only be paid into an account in the name of the payee ... and that the two had to be identical. So if the account is in the name of Miss J Smith a cheque payable to Jane Smith should be refused.

I'm sure the banks are pragmatic and allow some leeway, but in theory, it shouldn't be the case, should it?
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)

since getting married seven months ago, relatives have started sending cheques to Mr & Mrs N Surname, I pay them into my sole account with no problems at all as we don't have a joint account, so I assume the thing about not caring about titles is true in my case.

Now that is something they shouldn't do. If cheques are payable to two people they should only be paid into an account which is for both those people. (Of course, if the cheque is payable to just one party they can be paid into a joint account!)
