My dog has gland issues as well as she refuses to eat dog food. We give it to her as much as we can but its a real battle with her. Anyway try adding some oats or bran (Bran-flakes or similar stuff) to your dogs food.

I actually make some doggie cakes you can find recipes anywhere if u google dog cake recipe. I add tons of oats and bran and veg and she loves them. Its only a occasionally treat and when she is really struggling with her bowels. But if your dog eats wet dog food then trying adding some food high in fibre to the food. Brown rice and pasta for example and plently of veg like carrots.

And everytime you go the vets ask for them to empty her glands or whatever its called. Generally if your at the vets for whatever reason they don't charge you for it. Also I know that some dog groomers offer the gland emptying service so see how much they are charging.

Not sure if its common in beagles but I know my dog a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel well her breed are known for suffering with there anal glands. Next time you go to you vets ask if its common in beagles and also ask about what food could help. When I go the vets I ask about a million questions, if am going to pay £23 just to see a vet then am getting my moneys worth and thats what they are there for. Also if see is struggling to go the toilet it could be she isn't get enough water as well so make sure you always have a water bowl out for her.

Is your dog wormed sometimes they sometimes scratch their bum on the floor due to this.

We have a beagle with an anal gland problem!

We were feeding her dry food (Orijen) and the vet said to add bran - it was awful, no improvement, she would be leaking stuff everywhere, we have throws over the furniture and they would be in the wash most days. The vet was good at emptying them, but the whole situation was miserable for her.

Then we changed her to a raw food diet, raw chicken wings, raw whole minced rabbit, meaty bones and vegetables/fruit (beagles eat anything that isn't nailed down!) and there has been a huge improvement - she now leaks so seldom I think the last time was about a month ago?

Sorry if the next bit is TMI - since we cut out the bran etc her stools have become smaller and much, much firmer - it was explained to me that the firmer stools 'push' against the anal glands now, emptying it naturally, where the larger, softer stools don't do that.

Anyway, it's worked for us - might be worth a try?

  • I agree that firming up the stools will in many cases resolve the gland problems.

Flax seed added to the food might help, available from most health stores.

The question of manually expressing glands is rather contentious- there are some who argue that it can make the glands less effective.

Mind you- I don't envy anyone who has to do it, yuck...

Just stumbled across this thread and think I may have found the answer! My bulldog has clearly had an 'itchy bum' or something the last couple of days, I've give him worming tablets and also flea & tick drops but now I'm wondering if he needs to go to the vet for this (there is no way I am doing it!).

I've only had him since October so don't know much yet, hes my first dog. Think I'll see how he goes tomorrow, if he's still 'tormented' I'll take him the vets.
If you're going to stalk me, while you're at it can you cut the grass, feed the dog & make sure I've got bread & milk in :D

I agree, where as I havent changed to a complete raw diet my la gets raw chicken wings three days a week every other week and so far have avoided the anal gland op which the vet is pushing for.

The raw chicken wings are enough to firm him up enough that he has to work at passing his stools without him having to struggle, keeps the glands working just nicely

Booked him in for tomorrow, £10.80 unless there's infection or anything then there will be a consultation fee on top.
