I was always lead to believe that chicken bones were a no no full stop due to splintering.I Reject your reality and substitute my own.

Most dogs on a BARF diet will get chicken wings as a large proportion of their food, raw obviously.
BARF isn't a route I'd want to take with my dog, but done properly most dogs do seem to thrive on it.When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -

You and me both Lucifer!
Though you'd probably need someone else to hold the dog as well.
I couldn't do it to mine
I wouldn't give my dogs bones either. About 15 years ago my ex neighbour rang for me in floods of tears. Her rough collie had been given some sort of meat bone and a splinter of bone had cut the dogs back passage and there was blood everywhere. Not pleasant for the dog or my neighbour when she got the vet's bill including call-out charge (Dog wouldn't go in the car).:wave:0 -
evening all
Just been reading this thread with interest, I have noticed a fishy smell coming from my dogs rear end, she is also chewing at her tail constantly, I will phone the vet tomorrow and ask to get her anal gland emptied, the problem is that she hates the vet and although she is only a small dog she struggles like mad, last time the vet put a muzzle on her as she was growling at the vet, but the dog escaped from it, and it took me and my DD to hold her down while the vet had a look at her. I ended up covered in scratches.
She will not let me or OH look at her b*m without snarling at us ( she is usually very placid) so god knows what she would be like with the vet. Do you think the vet would give me a seative to give the dog, before I take her in, I think this is the only way we will get the anal gland emptied, and I cant bear the smell.0 -
Redruby, you've nothing to lose by ringing your vet to ask. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0

Quick update - my dog had an op to remove his anal glands a few weeks ago. They were becoming a real problem with having to be emptied every month or so. Luckily the op was covered by insurance (cost just over £1,000!!!).0

Pay the vet. Do not do this yourself.
This is one of those jobs that you pay someone else to do and no matter what they charge you still come away thinking you have paid under the odds and got yourself a bargain0 -
If your dog has this problem then getting the anal glands emptied is a must. Yes most groomers will offer this service as it is easy money and I say this as I have taken a grooming course myself and they suggest that anal glands and nails are ways of upping income. However they empty the glands by lifting the tail and feeling for the glands under the hole (a raised prominent lump either side under the anus). They then push up and out. There is no guarantee that the glands will be fully emptied or that this will be done correctly as not a lot of training is necessary for grooming, you do not actually have to have a qualification! You will probably find with your vet, if the problem is severe then they actually enter a finger into the anus to fully empty the glands :-( Sorry for being so graphic, but do not take this job lightly. If infection sets in then it can be an unpleasant and costly outcome for both you and your dog.0

If a dog isn't expressing his glands, then there could be a medical problem.
However, dry food helps rather than wet, canned food. Lots of fibre as well.
Get a local groomer to show you how to empty glands. Many offer this free, as they hate to do this job!!!!!
