I found that midwives just deferred back to the GP's position. It was only getting so ill and losing over 3 stone in weight that i was admitted to hospital and seeing a consultant that actually got the problem addressed. However if you are "only" feeling sick 24/7 and not actually becoming dehydrated and realy ill, then it might just have to be part of the course with this pregnancy.
Personally I found your comment "only" feeling sick 24/7 and not actually becoming really ill as quite upsetting. "only" feeling sick is just as awful as physically being sick, as I am finding this morning sickness harder to take than my first pregnancy where I was physically sick for most of 14 weeks. I had 2 days off sick with my last pregnancy this time I have been signed off for 2 weeks at the minute.

I've just recently stopped with awful morning (24 hour!) sickness. I did eventually manage to 'control' it better, but whilst I managed to stop most of the vomiting in later weeks, I never quite managed to get over the constant sicky feeling.

Firstly, I wore travel sickness bands 24/7. I'm not sure I'd recommend this - mine were really tight, and I eventually became quite sore from them but I had to weigh benefits against this!

Secondly, I never got out of bed without eating something, even when it was the last thing I wanted or felt able to do. There were mornings when I'd get half way through a cracker or some weetabix, be violently ill, then come back and finish it off. Repulsed the other half at first but he soon got used to it! I felt better after being ill, sent the nausea away for a while.

I found eating regularly helped too - keeping my blood sugar up. For about 3/4 weeks I literally lived on fruit and greek yoghurt - little bits at a time, snacking near-constantly. I actually still find, at week 25, if I let myself get hungry I am likely to be sick.

I hope you find something that works for you. I never believed mine would end (I got quite annoyed with people saying 'don't worry, by week 12 you'll be absolutely fine' - especially when it got to week 16!) but it definitely got better as time went on. Hopefully you'll find the same thing - fingers crossed!

I suffer quite badly with morning sickness. I've given up taking anything for it (fourth baby now!) as I have found coping strategies that work for me (such as making sure i'm sick befire I eat anything, eating little and often, keeping as still as possible, not going anywhere if I can help it! etc)

I was however once prescribed 2 different anti sickness tablets by two of my consultants. One began with A (Avomene? or something like that) and another began with a C (can't remember the name as this was years ago). Neither made a blind bit of different tbh and so I didn't get a repeat. I was told that they would cause no harm as I was after 16 weeks.

However.......I also suffer from really painful SPD to the point where I can't walk.

I've been slated before on here about bigging up the advantages of acupunture but......it completely sorted out my SPD.

When I spoke with my acupunturist (is that a word?) she told me that the thing she treats most is morning sickness! and that many of her patients find that it has quite a radical impact.

    May be worth looking into?

    Hi

I hope you are feeling better. I have suffered dreadfully with both of my pregnancies. With DD I was just told to get on with it by the doctors and swore afterwards I would never have kids again. Ten years later and I finally plucked up the courage to do it again. This time was even worse and the doctor prescribed metoclopramide (sp?) - which is a drug they give in hospital quite a lot if there is a risk of the patient being sick (it always makes me giggle when im watching casualty and the paramedics wheel in the patients listing what treatment they have given them and metoclopramide is always first in the list - i know im sad)

But anyway I digress - the tablets definately took the edge off it and i managed to get back to work full time for the rest of my pregnancy. If you google hyperemesis gravidarum they mention metoclopramide quite a lot.

Trust me i tried everything ginger, ginger biscuits, dry toast, sea bands buut nothing worked apart from the tablets.

Good luck it will be worth it in the end!

I was never actually sick during my pregnancy, but had dry retching and feeling like I might be sick through a good deal of it. For me, homeopathic remedies did nothing, travel sickness bands were great - they didn't actually cure it, but they took the desperate edge of the sick feeling. Eating little and very often helped - anything I could bear -oatcakes and apples were a favourite. Chewing gum also helped - I found the pepperminty taste was calming. I have to say that I did very little cooking or food shopping during my pregnancy as it all made me feel so ill. I also found it hard to hold conversations in case I retched.
I had no sympathy from work who would not let me work from home or go part-time 'pregnancy is not an illness' was the phrase used. However, I did feel better as time went on. Do try the sea sickness bands if you haven't already. Much sympathy. Why can't we just sit on an egg for few weeks instead?

I was sick every day with my first two, up until the day they were born. With the last one I was sick until around 14 weeks then I felt sick every day. It was much worse just feeling sick because it went on all day. I didn't read your other posts in other threads so you may have been through all the obvious stuff like sipping water before you sit up in bed, trying ginger biscuits or ginger in tea, or dry crackers or toast, or sniffing peppermint essential oil.
Good luck with it, it really does get you down doesn't it. Sorry I can't be more useful, just offering my sympathies.
  • I have a friend who claims that reflexology was the only thing that made her feel better during her pregnancy...not sure if this is what you mean but maybe worth a try. I didn't used to believe in it till someone used it on me when I fainted unexpectedly - I was feeling really dizzy and nauseous and they cracked the top knuckle on my thumbs and it was like a switch flicked and I suddenly felt absolutely fine...
