My debt diary/SOA

  • Hi

Ive been thinking about my life or lack of it (I know this is a bit deep but....) I've always known I want to do something useful with my life waether it be charity based/ medical or teaching, I don't like the idea of earning money to make the shareholders/owners rich.

So anyway I've been looking into doing teaching but I don't have a degree so I'd have to get one first, but I don't know how I would manage without being paid. I think I want to do primary school teaching but I'm not quite sure. How do you find out?

There is a degree course at a local uni that would give Qualified Teacher Status at the end of the three years and I would then be able to go and teach.

Now obviously money is an issue. I know the government give people bursarys if they are doing a PGCE but how does it work with this sort of course? And I'm guessing it wouldnt work doing it part time as its traning in schools. But then should I look at doing a normal degree part time and then do my PGCE which although it would take longer would mean I would have more money (maybe?!) I just have so many options and the website is so confusing!

Does anyone have any experience with doing part time courses? Can you get any funding?

Sorry its abit of a long post!

    Thanks
    Jen

hi there well done on your debt free journey you're doing so well. Re going into teaching -you wont get a bursury for a degree only for the pgce but do you really really really want to do it? Do you have any experience (voluntary working in schools?) i finished a PGCE course last yr and its sooooo much hard work i can tell you as is the first yr of teaching. Plus you'll be about 18 grand in debt after it! sorry i'm not trying to put you off but its best to go into it w/ your eyes open!
  • Hi cocalls

Thanks for your comment, I'm about 80% certain I want to go into teaching. A friend of mine is doing her PGCE this year and it has kind of inspired me.

I know it will be hard work and thats not putting me off, are you doing secondary or primary? I'm mostly worried about the debt I'll have, like you say £18 grand is a lot!

    Hi Jen!

Just wanted to say i just read through your diary and you are doing fab! I know how hard it is to get up the corage to start a diary on here, i've only just done it! Have you had a look at the £10 a day challenge? I've just joined this month and its really helped me up my income in ways you would never think of!

Have u tried martin's budget planner? I used that as a basis and budgeted for absolutely everything down to haircuts, dentist, christmas etc then just summarised it all down. I'm doing the free christmas thing but money away anyway and just figure if i get enough vouchers and can do christmas for free, the money ive saved will be a bonus!

anyway hope i haven't babbled too much!

I thought about doing the £10 a day but at the minute I just don't have time! Maybe in a month or two when things have calmed down. but at the minute I'm spending every spare minute packing or painting!
I have his budget planner downloaded and it really helped work out some of the monthly outgoings I hadn't planned for, but I really need to do it again

Oh and no with the competitions! not a bean! I need to do some more I haven't done them in about a week!

I'm just off to find your diary now and have a nosy

hey that does sound an interesting job, i feel really stuck at the min. I don't have anything I'm brilliant at or that I really enjoy doing. I just know I want to do something useful with my life and that I can't sit behind a desk all day. If things were different I'd be working for charities in Africa or the like.
I tried to speak to OH about it but he is an engineer, always wanted to be and is really good at it so he can't understand what problems I am having deciding what to do!
how are you supposed to know????
