Sounds lovely, do you have a pic?"Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"

Hi, a question for all you seasoned dressmakers....Would the poly/cotton sheeting be any good for lightweight summer skirts/dresses. Or is it just too limp and flimsy?
I ask because I've not attempted to make any clothes yet (still practicing sewing in a straight line:rotfl: )....But I'd like to try a basic A-line skirt, and wouldn't want to waste money on better fabric, when I may make a complete hash of it:rolleyes:
Hi Lily-Lu, I'm not sure that poly/cotton sheeting would be firm enough for a skirt, might be ok for a lightweight top though. All cotton might be crisp enough for a dress/skirt, it all depends on the thread count I think.
I've just bought a pure linen sheet on sale to make a jacket and a top with, my sis (doesn't sew) thought I'd completely lost it! But it was so wide, 227 cm I'll get heaps out of it, and it was much cheaper than buying dressmaking linen on the roll.
You could use your sheet as a 'practice' skirt, just practising putting in a zip, checking the fit etc and then treat yourself to some pretty fabric after that. It sounds like a pain to do that, but honestly, it will pay off in the end if you have a perfectly fitting pattern that you can use over and over again without having to worry about the fit.
welshworrier that sounds fabulous!

I agree that it often pays off being creative in sourcing your fabric - I have once made a fabulous wrap-around skirt out of Finnish curtaining material. Interior decorating shops sometimes have cut-off baskets with great stuff for making waistcoats, handbags, weekend bags and the like. I am sure the poly-cotton sheeting could be used for something, too. But maybe not a skirt as Mrs F. says."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0

I told them that over here in the UK people were worried incase they were going bust and they would`nt order anything else.
They replied that my order was slighly delayed in the shipping dept and i`d get in within 4 - 5 days.
Will keep you all posted.
Just letting you know that my patterns turned up today.0 -

I love my trusty Brother machine, and have recently been making Morsbags out of quilt covers, to great appreciaition from my family and friends.
I used to make lots of clothes for myself - and I've done a few 'meringue' type wedding dresses in my time too.
Nowadays, I just make stuff for DD and her dolls - keeps my hand in! I won't make for myself anymore - Primark is cheaper, LOL!0 -
Loving this thread (have read the first eleven pages), have a really old Brother machine at my parents that I have been planning on bringing home because I really want to get into dressmaking (all I have made in living memory are a lot of french maids dresses (Rocky Horror Show outfits for LOTS of friends) and more recently just straight line stuff (cushion, curtains for a wendy house etc)
Oh god, just realised the french maids outfits were about ten to twelve years ago!!!! Now that is upsetting.
I was thinking of buying a new sewing machine but I really think that my trusty old Brother only needs an oil and a new needle and failing that a darn good service. I have also found a couple of patterns that I want to make from Simplicity/New Look so very handy to know that they are so much cheaper to ship from the states.
I had been wondering where to get the material from and someone kindly mentioned Walthamstow market on about page 7 - as I live in Walthamstow.... (I can't belive I had to be told - you can get EVERYTHING in the market - apparently it is the longest streetmarket in Europe)
Now I just need to hurry up and move flat so that I will have enough room to lay out patterns.£34,547 (Dec 07); Current debt: £zilch (Debt free December 2010)

Don`t think so, i just emailed them at info@sewingpatterns.com and told them that people in the UK , on message boards were thinking they`d gone bust because of the length of time patterns were delivered, and they emailed me more or less straight back.Try it yourself, it might work for you as well?
Good luck0 -
