We stayed at The Maximilian - a 5 minute walk to the Old Town Square. It was slightly above our budget but worth it.
You may want to use Tripadvisor and Hotelscomparison to help you. Also don't forget to check on the websites of the hotels that you like the sound of, as they can sometimes have special offers on.0 -
I have visited Prague twice in the past year. Once staying in Malastrana and once in Vinorahdy. Malastrana is a 5-10 minute walk to the bridge and is fairly residential so prices are cheaper than in town. Vinorahdy is a 5minute walk to wenceslas square and has its own underground station. We stayed at a hotel called pension 44 which is fairly basic but in a very good location (it cost us £25 a night) Vinorahdy has its own square with a church in the centre which is surrounded by local bars and restaurants (v cheap -e.g. posh italian restaurant around £3.50 a main £1 a drink) but is only a 5 minute walk to wenceslas shopping square. The underground will take you to all tourist attractions for around £2.50 unlimited pass per day.
Airport tranfers can be booked for £15 each way (english speaking private taxi)0 -
We stayed at the Cloister Inn, five minutes walk from the Charles Bridge and the old town square, much nicer area than wencelas square in my opinion.
We stayed there as well. Absolutely superb. Nice quiet location but only 5 mins walk from Charles Bridge, Old Town Square etc. Apparently it used to be the secret police hq back in the communist days.

i went with a few mates for a week, absoloutly fantastic city break, totally recommended.
we stayed in a hostel outside the city and bought a week tram pass, the accomodation was a bit dated but very clean and tidy.dont rule out a hostel, they have rooms with 2 beds 4 beds etc.. not the old dorm style so still quite private.
there is so much to see and do in prague so you wont spend much time in the hostel.
do keep an eye on your belongings, like most cities there are pick pockets and thieves but do not let this put you off one bit.
this is probably the best MSE city break possible.value for money is great.

My husband lives and works in Prague and has done for the last 7 years. We have an apartment very close to the Holiday Inn Express mentioned above.
Wensceslas Square is scummy. You do not want to stay there but close is a good option.
Public transport is quick, clean, reliable and safe. Just keep your wits about you regarding your wallet or purse. I always use a bag across my body and keep my hand on it when in crowded places. I have never had any trouble whatsoever and have spent many a happy hour wandering the streets alone. That sounds awful but I'm sure you know what I mean:rotfl:
My husband tells me that the transport authorities have discontinued the short season tickets which used to be available for 3, 7 or 15 days which were terrific value. Now there is a 5 day pass which costs a whopping 500kr. I always used a 15 day pass when I visit but I shall now probably just buy a sheaf of tickets and just use as required. You can buy the tickets in the arrivals hall of the airport if you wish. There is a kiosk near the exit. You punch the ticket when you get onto a bus, tram or metro station so it is easy to have a supply with you.

agree - I'd avoid Wenceslas Square - it was full of stag/hen nights when we were there. We stayed at Hotel Merlin which was a 15 minute walk out of town but in a quiet place and not too touristy. The outside looked dreadful and was above a gym- but we were pleasantly surprised once inside. It was safe to walk around and there was lots of public transport.
Stag nights etc tend to be a problem if you're going over a weekend. However, I've been to Prague a few times now and don't find them to be a problem if you're there during the week - e.g. Monday to Thursday or some such period of time. I stayed just off Wencelas Square last time and the hotel was very good and free of the marauding stags/hens. It probably helped also that it was a four star hotel. We're all looking for a bargain at the end of the day, but those parties tend to look for the cheapest end of the market and it's easy enought to avoid them mid week.;)Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0 -
the airport is about 40 mins away by public transport. from the airport catch bus 119 to a stop called dejvicka (i'm pretty sure its the last stop on the line.)from there catch the underground to the city. if your stopping in wencelas sqaure the stop you want is called museum. you can do all this on one ticket. you should also buy a extra half price ticket if you have a lot of luggage. it sounds complicated but is really very easy. buses and underground trains are very frequent and there are only 3 underground lines so it is very easy to figure out. i cant remember how much this costs but it is very cheap. alternatively taxis are said to be expensive and you have a chance of been ripped off.
I went last feb and stayed at Holiday Inn Express in Prague, and did exactly as posted above, realy easy to do and ticket cost about 50/70p.
Used the undergrond and trams to visit the castle etc, so cheap and easy to do. Dont book organised trips, people are very friendly and enjoyed trying to converse with them.
But i did arrange a taxi on the return to the airport, about £17 and also booked the room until 7pm for an extra £25.0 -
i stayed in smirovo, i wouldnt recomend it there was not much to do, the 24 hour bus/train ticket is good and i found the police helpful, they carried my luggage up the stairs , i wandered round prague on my own and felt safe.
oh got ripped off getting a taxi from the airport and you get more for your money using euros but not everywhere takes them0 -
I used www.a-prague.com for apartments and transfers and it was really cheap and the apartments were bang in between the old town and the new town...very handy. Between 4 of us it was something like £15p.p.p.n0
